His name really isnt Steve....
I was looking at my Facebook tonight and noticed a person I hung with a 100 years ago in High School and he had the following statement on his status.
" We are praying for our team of missionarys that left for Nepal today. They are going over there to rescue teen children from prostitution"
My reply was "What about King and Pierce Countys where over 500 teenagers will become victims of human trafficking this year alone, are you doing anything about that except pray."
He asked " What is your point"
I reminded him in the book of Acts that we start saving the world by first saving our community's in effect.
He then called me a Bible Dicer what ever the hell that is,but I know I must have hit a big root in his Christian mouth.

(12,081 posts)If he is only going over there temporarily then he can always help locally when he comes back. There's nothing wrong with doing both. My son's school has a food drive for our local food bank every year. Every year they also have a humanitarian drive for Africa. Of course I'm sure this guy wouldn't mind converting a few Hindus while they are there which of course is just insulting as hell but as far as helping save children from prostitution I don't see why he can't help in both places.

(2,682 posts)I think you hit on a very real issue -- people who want to "save" others in some remote location, but ignore the same problems in their own home location. Missionaries have an agenda -- second on the list is doing good; first is converting people. Always in that order. He's probably tapped out at home and is looking for new fields to plow.
The Straight Story
(48,121 posts)My rw fundie sister and her church have done some missions in various areas here in the US and elsewhere.
Not just showing up preaching but building, cleaning, helping set up x/y/z, bringing in aid and so on.
Sister spends her own time doing this for no pay. We don't see eye to on a lot, but I give her that.
Now it is possible that there are other missions doing some things and you don't want to duplicate efforts. And as far as human trafficking here, that is the domain of the fbi/homeland security.
And a bible dicer is basically someone who takes things out of historical context (the bible is a lot like the constitution, every one sees it applied in a different way - hence all the attorneys and courts).
I think the question was fair but delivery was off. Maybe something like "There is a lot of that here, is your church involved locally and if so what can I do to assist?"
