The woman who sought justice for Steubenville's Jane Doe. Here's her story.

The actions of this woman are noteworthy and laudible.

The Steubenville rape case has come to an end and the verdict has been heard.

Two Ohio high school football players were found guilty of raping a drunk 16-year-old girl.

As a blogger who first reported on the Twitter messages surrounding the alcohol-fueled party -- many messages later deleted -- it is sometimes surreal to look back and revisit the events of the past eight months.

When I first wrote about the unbelievable events that took place in this town where I lived for five years -- events which culminated in a passed-out female minor, Jane Doe, being carried around unconscious as men from the high school football team boasted about rape on video, tweeted jokes about violating her and, at one point, disgustingly said how "some people deserve" to be urinated on, I had NO clue the firestorm that it would cause. ...more

I grew up in a small town that was basically a high school sports fiefdom and it left me with a lot of bitterness. You have adults who look up to the teenage society there as if that is the only time in life when you actually live; and the male athletes are worshiped. That led to a LOT of unaddressed bullying in my day, even at times from adult school employees at kids targeted by the athletes. If someone had been raped at a party I can't imagine it wouldn't have been covered up for the sake of the boys.

Teenagers need role models, they do not need to BE role models for adults to look up to. Somehow they need to be given a desire to learn to grow into adult society, not have the best they will ever be happen as kids, when the "great warriors" can do no wrong and get all the raping and pillaging they want before the drudgery of adulthood comes. The community created the environment here, I wish it were possible for the community to take a close look at itself, but pride will prevent it. And this is by no means the only community that worships its child society and upholds its teen created hierarchy. Not at all.
