A double amputee allegedly shot a Walmart manager, then attempted to make a getaway on a motorized wheelchair.Daniel Pirtle, 45, who has two metal, prosthetic legs, entered a Walmart in Anchorage, Alaska, with an unleashed dog Saturday afternoon, the Anchorage Daily News reported. Pirtle claimed that the 5-month-old puppy, named Wookie, was a service animal.
The assistant manager, 33-year-old Jason Mahi, said he asked Pirtle to leave the store, which led to an argument.
The man was being escorted out when he whipped out a "big, long gun" and shot Mahi in the stomach, witness Wayne Toovak told the paper.
<...>
Mahi's family told KTUU Monday that Mahi had undergone abdominal surgery and was in critical condition.

When we discuss background checks, we should include social media checks. That 'fave quote' alone is enough to raise a big, red flag.

(53,661 posts)He does fit that NRA demographic of old or feeble who needs their guns!!!
But service animals are supposed to be on a leash. That was the issue, not the animal, who was lucky to not get shot in the melee.
What a tragedy for the man who was shot by this damned fool.
And he's only been charged with 'assault and weapons misconduct.' Really?

(8,492 posts)Yeah. Really. Whatever happened to attempted murder? I guess we all have to 'hope' the guy dies to make sure this nut doesn't get back on the street. Sickening.

That should be taken into account here. The maiming, potential loss of life, the disability, all of that.
Some states would call it attempted murder or manslaughter, felony assault, intent to do grave bodily harm. I don't know what punishment for 'assault' entails in Alaska, but shooting someone is just 'misconduct'?
All because he didn't get to have his way or someone was rude to him - and even if someone kicked the dog - would just leaving the store been enough?
I can understand a person in a wheel chair being afraid enough to carry a gun, but I don't have much sympathy for this guy, even though he's disabled.

Since gun folk love to compare deaths from guns with deaths from car accidents. I.E. What are ya gonna do.....ban cars?
From time to time, people are going to get shot. Occasionally, several people will be shot, and in rare circumstances, a whole room of adults, children, etc., may get shot and killed.
In time, this won't stories like this won't even need reporting. They'll be everyday occurences like car crash fatalities, perhaps covered on the local news on a slow day.

(2,173 posts)into a store or restaurant if you simply say it is a service animal. Yes, a horse. I've been challenged with my service dog and made it clear in every case that the employee or manager was in violation of federal law. She goes with me everywhere and I need her. I don't happen to carry a gun with me, but I've got my dog.
