First,
I will not mention the name of the public school this involves but honestly a bit of detective work
and a viewing of the 6 o clock news and you can put it together. I work as an elementary level public
school substitute. Today, I was at a lovely elementary in 5th grade. We are doing weather and egads
the local weatherman for WUSA9 (CBS) Topper Shutt came to talk to us for about an hour.
The first 20 minutes he explain how weather works and was fine. Next someone asked him about global
warming. Instead of the appropriate ("divisive even though its not=keep crazy parents subdued" response
the man went into a tirade, after asking everyone to turn their cellphones off. He cited Lomborg (Yes that
discredited statistician as an expert). He talked about how he was more concerned that North Korea had nukes
pointed at us. He gave a bullshit cyclical argument, cited global cooling as something that was all the rage in the past. He
basically lied and indoctrinated about 150 2nd and 5th graders. His producer said no more questions about global
warming but by then the hour assembly was done. Teachers mouths hit the floor so I know he saw that. It was
if you stepped back 5 years and then pretended to be a climate change denier. It was at the end of the day so
I only got a chance to talk to a couple of students in the hall. I told them that Topper Shutt was NOT a climate
scientists and if they wanted informed opinions they needed to seek out truth in a variety of journals etc. One kid
scaridly asked me if NK was gonna nuke us. I had to give him a hug to get him to stop sobbing. I knew mimbo weather
men had issues but damn this was eye opening. I'm pretty confident letters from home will be coming and the principal
assured me and the whole 5th grade teachers Mr Shutt would not be back. Again, not naming school names but the 6 oclock
news could have some revealing footage. How sad is it that I rushed to post on D.U. LOL

He also provides weather forecasts for WHUR 96.3 FM, and has since 1988. In early 2008, readers of washingtonpost.com's "Capital Weather Gang" voted Topper their favorite local weathercaster in a recent poll."

(609 posts)Obviously, he knew what he said would be controversial and didn't want anyone to capture it for the record.
Did someone happen to record it anyway?
I live in NoVa. Curious where this was and will be googling shortly. Luckily, my kids are in high school now and their BS detectors are quite refined. But, I've had to get involved in similar situations (with controversial speakers) before so I'm always paying attention to these types of things. People do need to speak out. Luckily, your administrators seem to be on top of the issue.

(1,977 posts)It wouldn't fly in a high school, the kids would have been all over him. These were 2nd and 5th graders.
