My oldest sister is a marathoner and triathlete. She was practicing today, bike riding. She had an accident. She has been in surgery for 6 hours now.

(47,141 posts)I don't know too much exept they are relieving pressure on her brain and there is some kind of liung complication. Doesn't sound good. But we are made out of some tough stuff. I am still thinking mostly positive at this point. I don't know if she was conscious. She has a teenage daughter and...it just wouldn't make sense for her not to pull through.

(16,350 posts)He's fine but did have to be taken by an ambulance to a trauma hospital. Scared me. I don't like bikes. They just seem so dangerous. My hubby loves to ride tho.
I hope your sister will be fine very soon. What kind of surgery is she having? Please keep us updated, ok? Think good thoughts.

(573 posts)then she will be receiving those from us. We often have the USOC cyclists on our city streets and I can't believe the times that some fool in a car is texting and almost takes out one or more cyclists.
Hope you get good news soon.

(47,141 posts)She is out of surgery and in ICU. She has good neurological function (able to move her extremeties), she has a broken clavicle, cracked ribs and a collapsed lung. Breathing tube. Maybe I should go to church this weekend.
Thank You all for your positive wishes. Love to all.

(16,350 posts)Considering. Ya know? She'll pull through. I don't know what a collapsed lung really means (using my iphone, hard to google it while i write this) but it sounds like it would be reversible. Oh I hope so, sweetie.

The family will need a lot of support. Athletes have a physical edge in recovery, but the mental impacts of a prolonged recovery can be very frustrating for them. They're just not used to the inactivity. While ability to move extremities indicates a great outcome so soon, a head injury will involve a prolonged recovery period, which will seem like thousands of years to her. Even tiny physical disabilities, like vertigo, freak them out.
You might have to go kick your sister's ass in a month! And remind her of the six hours of miserable waiting, and tell her to be thankful of the chance to turtle along.
She'll do well - but it will be a character-building experience.

(61,694 posts)You are there with her and don't want to leave.
Ministers are usually available at hospital for comforting if that helps.
I'm hoping for the best for her. Head trauma is tricky, but it sounds like she is in a good hospital. Hang in there.

(47,141 posts)Hours after the surgery last night there was more bleeding on the other side of her brain, (opposite from where they had permanently removed part of the skull) the doctors put a tube in that side to monitor pressure. Sometime later the pressure had started to drop. They also put a mainline to a vein on her left side. She is in pretty bad shape, we may not know how bad for 2 or 3 days.
Whatever happened it seems she must have impacted something more than the ground at high speed.

(16,254 posts)We had a friend who had the same type of accident last summer. She had head trauma, as well, and they were cautious about her recovery, but after a summer of therapy and rest, she is back to teaching. She still has some mobility problems, but they are slowly disappearing.
Think positive and loving thoughts and keep them flowing her way. She is going through the worst of it now, but she is with you still and will eventually fight her way back.
Hugs to you and your sister/family.

(47,141 posts)She is stabilized but still has elevated pressure on her brain, good part is that it is below the level that causes major concern according to the doctors. THey have said that this pressure peaks 3 to 5 days after the incident. So today she has tried opening her eyes and is responding to stimulation, verbal and physical. My mom says it is difficult to watch, she was excited and crying at the same time.

(47,141 posts)My big sister started to wake up today and take more notice of what was going on, according to reports from family that was there. She squeezed her daughters hand too. She is still not following commands but we are thankful to see what progress there is. She has been battling a fever the last few days but my understanding is it is under control. Tomorrow I am visiting her with the whole family and then we are going out for Easter brunch.
