(16,993 posts)in the snow and on slick streets. They would drive way too fast for the road conditions, and didn't seem to understand that while their vehicle may have had better traction, it still couldn't stop better than anyone else.
Hope everyone is OK.

(32,609 posts)Whenever we saw someone driving too fast for conditions we had one word to describe the behavior - "Texan"
We used the same sneer to describe out of control behavior on the ski slopes.

(24,135 posts)There's a reason for that crack about Texans in Colorado and it has a history.
As a native of Colorado I can attest to the sheer rudeness of rich Texans who come to CO and act like they owned
the state. Their behavior in restaurants and bars got them booted out sometimes.
I no longer visit Vail or Snowmass...not sure if the Texans are less rude - doubt it.

(302 posts)The rudest people I saw were locals who resented anyone from another state. I understand your collective wrath has now turned to those you are afraid will "Californicate" Colorado. Perhaps you all wouldn't have such paranoia about outsiders if Colorado was not such a third-world state.

(102,200 posts)I'm not entering into this TX v CO debate, but for you to say that Colorado is a "third-world state" just shows what YOU are all about (and it isn't concern about being factual).
DURHAM D
(32,609 posts)it can be done.
third world indeed...

(102,200 posts)I just hope we keep moving in this direction...

(113,232 posts)which most of us have had MANY experiences), and then you turn around and insult them? and I would guess you don't even see the disconnect.
years ago, a texan bought a piece of property here that he turned into a park for texans only. thankfully, it didn't last long.
by the way, a lot of people in NM feel the same way about texans, and for the same reasons.

(302 posts)Actually, from the responses to this string of messages it is apparent you have an advantage. Your weather is bad and all you guys in Colorado have to do is post on DU.
niyad
(113,232 posts)see this, you are sadly mistaken.
by the way, the weather here (at least in my little area of CO) is mild compared to many areas of the country. but you go right ahead, making snide cracks, and then complaining that that is what the CO residents are doing. it's really quite funny.

(24,135 posts)please elaborate...

(302 posts)Look at how many businesses in Colorado are actually headquartered in places like California and Texas. From the messages in this string, California and Texas drive the real estate and tourism businesses, as well. Don't get me wrong. I have 5 employees in Colorado. They all think it's a great place to live and work. Perhaps characterizing Colorado as third world is a bit of an exaggeration. (Aren't we allowed to do that here on DU?) But, in the overall economy of our country, it is no California, Texas, or New York.

(24,135 posts)who's gonna stop you if you can't stop yourself?

Colorado: rank 9th to 13th during the time period Nationally
During the same time period, Texas ranked no higher than 24th (from 24 to 27 in rankings)

(11,412 posts)Us Natives don't get rude until the transplants act like dicks. Ugly spral and traffic jams, air pollution here is just like it is in California. The 5:00pm traffic is so bad now I no longer ride my motorcycle to work. Go five feet stop. Go five feet stop. The bike over heats cause you can't get an air through the radiators. In just the past year the traffic turned to Califonia style jams. I look around and for real about every fifth car I see has California plates.

(17,086 posts)A Texan calling Colorado "third world" is just laughable. But then I grew up in Maine, where we call folks from Massachusetts Massholes and understand the nuances of good natured regional rivalries.

(32,609 posts)My Colorado experience was in the 60s as I moved away before 1970. When I returned a couple of times every year to ski through the 70s and 80s I always passed on Vail and Snowmass for the same reason. Hopefully things have changed.

(24,146 posts)even more so when the roads are bad

(302 posts)Much of Colorado used to be part of Texas, you might remember. Also, keep in mind that the smart Texans don't drive in Colorado. We stay here where it's warm.
otohara
(24,135 posts)is how obnoxious wealthy Texans travel to Colorado to ski.
They treat the environment like a their personal toilet
Skiing is the main reason Texans come to Colorado, to ski at our world class resorts.

(302 posts)I'm standing next to my jet plane and I can't hear what you're saying. Seriously, how many people can that be flying private jets to Aspen? Yes, there are some; we put up with them, too.
And, if you want to talk about SOME Texans having little regard for the environment, you might have a point. Having lived in Colorado, I know that the people there seem to be more appreciative of protecting the environment. I remember the Brown Cloud that used to hang over Denver. It is much less noticeable now.

(46,436 posts)Alaska has been overrun by Texas oil men. I'm really quite tired of them.
Big Oil has just bought our state outright this past week, but I'm too depressed to talk about it.

(102,200 posts)for this one... But damn if my pup didn't wake me up very early this morning needing to go "potty" NOW (!) and WOW...We must have a foot at least by now--'knew I should have gone through the garage to find my gaiters--damn, sopping wet jeans and foyer.
On edit--just watched that video... Damn, I'm glad I wasn't out on the interstate... that is nasty... I hope all made it ok.

(11,412 posts)Rules for driving in Colorado when it's snowing.
1. If driving in the snow and bad weather scares you, stay the fuck home.
2. All-season tires are not snow tires.
3. Clean off all your windows 100%.
4. Keep your washer fluid topped off.
5. Put some extra weight in the back of your car or truck.
6. If you're going to drive very slowly do it in the far right lane.
7. Stop texting and stay off the fucking cell phone. If you want to talk or text pull off the road and stop.
8. Take a winter driving class. You will learn a lot and have some fun doing it.
As a fourth generation Coloradian some of us do know how to drive and stop in the snow. We have a shit load of transplants here now and most have no idea how to drive in storms like this.

(273 posts)I had no idea 25 was closed, and was going to get on the road in a couple of hours.
I'll have to decide how badly I need to get to Loveland.

(22,541 posts)I will be at DIA to pick him up. Stupid people who can't drive in the snow had better stay out off the roads starting at 4:30. Period. I will go around you. I'll call you some help. But unless you managed to get yourself hurt I'm not stopping to dig you out this time.

(353 posts)Now I hear more from family and friends complaining about Californians. Anyway I now live in Washington State and get amazed by how people here cannot drive in the snow. However the tourists seem to find it difficult to drive in the rain. All depends on what you are used to.
