The country’s voter ID laws, in 1 map

On Monday, Arkansas Gov. Mike Beebe (D) vetoed a measure that would have required voters to show identification before voting, drawing renewed attention to an issue Democrats and Republicans have tussled over in numerous states.

Thanks to a handy map from the National Conference of State Legislatures, you can take a look the voter identification laws in all 50 states. Some have no regulations, while others have considerably stricter laws on the books. Click on the map for more details on the specific regulations in each state. (The data on the NCSL Web site was updated on March 7.)

Two notes:

* In Virginia, Gov. Bob McDonnell (R) signed a bill that would require voters to present a photo ID when they cast a ballot as soon as fall 2014. That is not reflected in the above map.

* In the key swing state of Pennsylvania, expect to hear more about the battle over voter ID laws later this year. Before the election last fall, a judge put on hold a law that would have required voters to show photo identification. The fate of the measure will be decided in a trial that is set to kick off on July 15. The law will not apply to Pennsylvania’s May primaries.

Well, not exactly true since it is voting minorities that are the actual problem for Republicans.

polling places. The one I've voted at for the past ten years is still going to be there, but our assigned poling place is a few miles further away. There's no rational for this (like population increase) and our now former poling place never had lines. Ever.

Curiously, existing PA law (predating the one on hold) requires you to show a photo ID the first time you vote at a new polling place. It's a slight of hand, but it forces us to show it. I can't wait to see a map analyzing the switching and the corelation of voting results. I'll bet you it will show something as sleazy as everything else Corbett has done.
