In 1996, he voted in favor of the Defense of Marriage Act.[25] He later asked his supporters to educate him on the issue and by 2001, when he wrote his autobiography, Conscience of a Liberal, Wellstone admitted that he had made a mistake.

IIRC, DOMA was passed by Congress just before the 1996 election. The GOP was sure he'd veto it, thus giving them ammunition to propel Bob Dole to the White House.

that question is did it <20 years later actually accelerate the gay marriage debate by creating it as a national issue at a time when it wasn't anywhere near being an issue on many voter's minds...

African American member of the Senate at that time. The paucity is always worth noting. She is also the only African American woman ever to serve in the Senate. Paucity worth noting.
