There was a viral buzz (positive) recently over this photo of mannequins is a Swedish store, about how they are, unlike most manniquens, realistic.
I find this mannequin form more attractive and sexy than most other mannequins, and I agree that it feels more realistic but, speaking as an artist here, it is not really much more realistic than a typical mannequin, and it is interesting why it feels realistic.
The extreme hip to waist ratio, the height of the waist, the length of the neck, and the tiny head... this is what an artistic anatomy text would call a "heroic" figure of a sort only very rarely found in real life and that few women could achieve. Big, powerful torso and hips with almost no fat, yet with tiny wrists and ankles. And this body is, whatever its dimensions, remarkably athletic. And note that the mannequin's heels are off the ground to make the already-long legs look longer.
This is not a typical woman, it is a Valkerie... an amazon. It is, however, an unrealistic and unachievable idealization of a WOMAN. It idealizes, and sometimes exaggerates, secondary sexual characteristics, rather than denying them. The hips are broad. The bust zaftig. The belly is convex.
Thus it feels realistic to us. It does not feel hostile to womanhood in the way an emaciated waif (the women's magazine ideal) or an athletic teenage boy with large breasts (the men's magazine ideal) do.
The problem is not that modern images of women are idealized, even unrealistically so. Art idealizes. The problem is when our modern ideals are alienated from or hostile to adult womanhood as an archetype.

"It's tragic that mannequins don't look like real people."

(53,031 posts)any plus size clothing would be too big for that mannequin. That's a normal sized figure, not even slightly overweight.

(570 posts)I don't think that these mannequins are equally as hostile to the female figure as the waifs. In part because they inflate feminine characteristics rather than denying them. Exaggerating female body parts in trying to represent women is better than cutting them off.
What would be more interesting than all mannequins being waifish or zaftig, would be just to have variety in mannequins. Something that acknowledges that people come in different heights, shapes, weights, etc. Clothes designers and manufacturers should be going to great lengths to create items that conform to and flatter your body as it is. Women (and men to a lesser extent) should not be going to great lengths to contort their bodies into shapes that fit the clothes.

Mannequins are meant to be retail clothing display hangers. I have no desire to see a mannequin that looks even remotely close to a real body.

(103,856 posts)What I so wish for is realistic sizing for women's clothing..like mens' has always been..
Measurements..accurate ones...in inches, so we can measure and get the perfect fit
Ages ago, there was a manufacturer in Texas called FemForm. My aunt;s store carried the,. Their slacks were sized by waist size in incles.. Tall- reg-short..
You could get each waist size with a combinations of hip sizes too.)
Their blouses also had sleeve lengths and shoulder width measurements..darts or no darts..
It was an experiment in truly tailored clothing at a reasonable price..
