(66,096 posts)Usually because country is a pretty conservative genre. I like Willie for his liberal politics. I know there are progressive country singers out there. Faith Hill and Tim McGraw I understand to be on the progressive side. And a few more. And I LOVE the Dixie Chicks. But the way they got kicked around by the country establishment for the crime of telling the truth in public really turned me away from country...

(45,274 posts)Song, Song of the south
Sweet potato pie, and I shut my mouth
Gone, gone with the wind
There aint no body looking back again
Cotton on roadside, cotton on the ditch
We all picked the cotton but we never got rich
Daddy was a veteran, a southern democrat
They oughta get rich man to vote like that singing
Song song of the south
Sweet potato pie, and i shut my mouth
Gone gone with the wind
There aint no body looking back again
Well somebody told us wall street fell
But we were so poor that we couldnt tell
The cotton was short, and the weeds was' tall
But Mr. Roosevelt's a' gonna save us all
Well momma got sick, and daddy got down
The county got the farm, and we moved to town
Poppa got a job with the TVA
We bought a washing machine, and then a Chevrolet
Song song of the south
Sweet potatoe pie, and I shut my mouth
Gone, gone with the wind
There ain't nobody looking back again

(9,748 posts)The "Bush" ban was *not* their first ban from Country radio stations. First time they got banned was for a tongue-in-cheek song about a woman killing her stalking and abusive ex-husband with poisoned black eyed peas. They claimed that was not Country.
Now, I dunno about you, but a funny song about a woman killing her stalking and abusive ex-husband with poisoned black eyed peas sounds like the very definition of Country to me!
But Country was looking to expand their base. Their plan: sing pop rock with a country accent while wearing cowboy clothes. That, and Country Disco (or Line-Dancing as they preferred to call it; but let's not kid ourselves, it was fucking Country Disco).
The Dixie Chicks did just the opposite. They dressed city while singing country. Even bluegrass. With steel guitars and banjos.
All fine and good if they failed. Unfortunately, they became the #2 best sellers in Nashville History. Elvis was the only person in history to outsell them in Country. Exactly how Elvis became Country is another question, but lets not go into that.
They made the Execs look like idiots, and they went looking for excuses.

(18,219 posts)but I am a huge fan of Willie, and the first time I heard "Goodbye Earl", I started listening the country stations just to hear it again. I loved that song!

(3,284 posts)I'll bet the best stuff is the underground, lesser-known music in "country".
But that's just my guess.

Same with Kris Kristoferson.

(1,515 posts)I always associate Willie more with Levon Helm, Kris Kristoferson and Steve Earle than country.
But I grew up in a house where country meant Johnny Cash (post-Sun), Johnny Horton and Loretta Lynn (for softer moments in the day, I guess).

(37,648 posts)We had some Hank Williams Sr. albums. But my mom had eclectic tastes...we had albums of all sorts: jazz, lots of movie musicals (Sound of Music, Music Man, South Pacific, any other musical you can think of), a bit of Hank Williams Sr. (Hey, good lookin', whatcha got cookin...howzabout cookin' somethin' up with me? Fo-do-de-o-doa...." , Andy Williams, Ricky Nelson, Robert Goulet, Frank Sinatra.....

(1,245 posts)Speaking of Steve, have you heard his boy Justin Townes Earle yet? The kid is fantastic, esp. his first 3 records (the latest, 4th one is decent but not quite on the same level of greatness as his first 3). I know every word to song on his first 3 records, play them ALL THE TIME. If you like Steve (esp. the Americana Steve of, say, the 'Train a Comin' cd), you'll love his kid. Amazing talented singer/songwriter, just like his dad.
Featuring Jason Isbell (of drive-by truckers fame) on guitar ...

(1,922 posts)Billie Joe Shaver was booked.
The stage was set and the band was ready, but Eddie Shaver did not show.
Willie walked in and whispered in Billie Joe's ear...
Eddie had od'd earlier that day.
Billie Joe went and sat down on the lip of the stage..
Got up and said that Eddie had got a better gig.
Willie walked on and blew it all away.
Check out "Electric Shaver".
That's what 'country' ain't.
