Pope Francis washes feet of Muslims (women) in unprecedented Easter rite http://bit.ly/163sCbG
____ Pope Francis washed the feet of 12 young offenders including two girls and two Muslims at a Rome prison on Thursday in an unprecedented version of an ancient Easter ritual, seen as part of efforts to bring the Catholic Church closer to those in need.
The pope knelt down, washing and kissing the young prisoners feet in the first Holy Thursday ceremony of its kind performed by a pontiff in prison, and the first to include women and Muslims.
Whoever is the most high up must be at the service of others, Francis said at the mass in the Casal del Marmo youth prison, a fortnight after being elected Latin Americas first pope.
I do this with all my heart because it is my duty as a priest, as a bishop. I have to be at your service. I love doing it because this is what the Lord has taught me, the 76-year-old said.

(45,319 posts)And this ritual he's doing is done by hundreds of ministers every year. Because Jesus, not Francis, started it.
Credit where it belongs. Jesus washed the feet of others but he did not add hate speech against anyone to his mix.

(85,984 posts). . . that he's made disgraceful and inexcusable remarks about his personal disdain for gays, using his bible as justification.
I'd appreciate some work from him on all of that. I refuse to believe that a loving god would be so antagonistic toward people who are, at the heart, expressing and practicing the very love Christianity professes to represent and celebrate.
Yeah, I find it very hard to respect someone who can't get this basic truth right; and worse, can't seem to keep from antagonizing denigrating people behind whatever he chooses to believe. I'd expect much, much better from the man pictured here.
Tell you what, though, Blue, my life doesn't allow me to avoid extending whatever comity and regard I can manage to folks like Francis. I'm looking for the best in everyone, and myself, and hoping for that best with all of my heart.

(43,164 posts)Don't expect anything revolutionary in terms of certain changes to the Church, but still, it's movement in the proper direction. Which was sorely lacking in Benedict (and even in JPII in terms of internal administrative policies).

(9,258 posts)We're not going to see the kind of progress that we want, but any movement of the Church towards emphasizing helping the less fortunate (the true message of Jesus) is a step in the right direction.
