OK then. S&M guy to be nailed to cross in L.A. on Easter Sunday

Robert Garrison, described as 'a 30-year-old sado-masochist from Florida', will be hammered onto a giant wooden cross behind a glass window in view of passersby at Battlecam TV's headquarters in Los Angeles.

The event is billed as 'honouring the sacrifices made by our Lord, Jesus Christ' - but it as been dismissed as inappropriate by some internet users in The States.

During the crucifixion a gospel choir will be sing Easter songs and chant Psalm 22 which starts with the immortal words 'My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?'

Mr Garrison will be left impaled by 12in nails for several hours while users of Battlecam TV's social networking website are invited to comment.

If they drove the nails through the wrists, wouldn't the person be likely to bleed out fairly quickly? I'm sure it would be easy to miss the major blood vessel there, but still-- it seems like it would've been likely to be over in much less than a day or two.

They said if the hands were nailed, the weight of the body would eventually pull the hand apart and he would fall from the cross. If the wrists were nailed he could bleed out like you said. So the priest teaching this class thought the hands and arms were tied to keep either of those things happening because of the nails. Now nailing the feet put him in an awkward position of being asphyxiated if he didn't push up to avoid it. When they broke his legs, he died of asphyxiation because he couldn't push up any more. The spear in the side was for good measure, just in case. Now I don't know if the priest knew what he was talking about so I'm sure someone who actually knows the physiology of how it could happen will probably weigh in.

The nails could have been driven through the palm of the hand. The nail could also be driven into the wrist at the intersection of the two arm bones. Most Catholic sculptures of the cruxifixion depict the nails going through the hands, but this may or may not be historically accurate.

I doubt most crucifixions lasted more than a couple of days. The Romans would commonly break people's legs to hasten death.

Some church goers in LA should protest this. I believe it could be considered sacrilegious by some believers.

I believe it could even be considered assault by the nailers. However, I think it would be better handled by the churches who would find this offensive rather than the police. It's just IMHO.

If this was in the spirit of devotion, the copy cat Crucifixion should have happened today. Easter Sunday was when JC was resurrected from the dead. Now, I wonder if anyone can duplicate that?

And I was cognizant of that while making my joke. Though the nails things seems to have been relatively rare (though surely not unique) it remains comical that somebody has a monopoly on what was the Roman Empires preferred method of execution for centuries.
