http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2012/02/02/alabama-republican-claims-low-teacher-pay-a-biblical-mandate/
A Republican State Senator from Alabama claimed this week that keeping teacher salaries low is actually an order from the Christian deity figure, imparted in ancient texts written by Jewish tribesmen thousands of years ago.
Speaking at a prayer breakfast recently, Alabama state Senator Shadrack McGill praised giving pay raises to politicians, saying that it helps to prevent bribery. Then he shifted gears and went in the opposite direction with regards to teachers, arguing against a bill that would increase their salaries.
Teachers need to make the money that they need to make, he said, according to Alabama newspaper The Times-Journal. There needs to be a balance there. If you double what youre paying education, you know whats going to happen? Ive heard the comment many times, Well, the quality of educations going to go up. Thats never proven to happen, guys.
Its a Biblical principle. If you double a teachers pay scale, youll attract people who arent called to teach. To go and raise someones child for eight hours a day, or many peoples children for eight hours a day, requires a calling. It better be a calling in your life. I know I wouldnt want to do it, OK?
OMG REALLY???!!!
You pay these people shit then they just aren't going to care about what they do. I don't think any teacher is looking make Mitt Romney Salary but hell they'd be happy to make in a year what Mittens makes in a day.
And think about this. You pay teachers a decent salary you're going to have more people applying for the job which gives you the chance to pick the very best of the applicants. Whereas you pay teachers crap you're going to lose alot of talented teachers who can't survive making less than $30k.

I'll bet a donut that part of the subtext here is conservatives pining for the days when teachers were women, and women knew their place, and were happy to get any kind of job that the patriarchy allowed them.

(10,337 posts)when it comes to high pay for politicians or CEOs, on the other hand,I seem to recall that Jesus didn't think too highly of pols or bankers either. Maybe we should start treating that group"Biblically".

(95,337 posts)it's just if it was up to politicians like this, he'd make sure that the masses are poorly educated. It was shown that lower IQ people tend to support republicans.

(154,021 posts)From the good and well read Alabama state Senator Shadrack McGill, where exactly in the old or new testament cn I find that. I read the former in the original, and I really don't recal. Granted I read the latter in Spanish, so perhaps the King James is a better translation. One never knows...
But from what I recall teachers are actually cherished and respected in the old testament. Granted, modern day teachers don't have to manage messages from god to the people, or the misbehaving children of Israel who insisted on prayers and sacrifices to Baal, but god never said don't feed them.
Who knew? Should I send an email asking for the actual chapter and verse?

(20,835 posts)he basically says you should pay teachers and pay them well. Of course he was talking about religious teachers (of course he was there were no public schools then), but the interpretive point would seem to be early Christians seemed to think paying those that taught you was important. So important it was a repeat instruction than seems to have spanned several generations of early church writing. Thus it is a founding principal of the Christian church.

Methinks the good senator needs to read it again.

(20,835 posts)but it finds its way into the Gospels as well. Suggesting Jesus himself or at least the very initial members of the group thought paying teachers was important. The obvious reason being it is a notion found in the old testament as well. Would one think a book written by religious teachers would tell you teachers are not worth paying? Of course not. Apparently only people that don't read the bible but claim to speak from authority about it believe this is true. It is really sad It's sadder these people are in legislative positions.

17 As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees before him. Good teacher, he asked, what must I do to inherit eternal life?
18 Why do you call me good? Jesus answered. No one is goodexcept God alone. 19 You know the commandments: You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, you shall not defraud, honor your father and mother.
20 Teacher, he declared, all these I have kept since I was a boy.
21 Jesus looked at him and loved him. One thing you lack, he said. Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.
22 At this the mans face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth.

(2,034 posts)politicians shouldn't be well paid, either. Somehow, I don't see Sen. McGill jumping on that bandwagon.

(101,307 posts)Please, please, someone run against him using his own words. Even if he's in an area that won't elect a Democrat in the next millennium, there must be a Republican there who has a modicum of decency who would replace him for the good of the state.
