Fraud Conviction tied to 2008 Obama victory

WISH TV Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Fraud was committed to get the name of Barack Obama on the ballot in St. Joseph County in 2008. A guilty plea entered Thursday could leave a stain on the Obama victory.

At the center of this story is Butch Morgan, a longtime Democratic Party leader who lost his post as St. Joseph County chair when the scandal broke. Morgan is accused of telling three people to forge names on a ballot petition including Bev Shelton who pleaded guilty to forgery and fraud. She has agreed to testify against the others.

"If she testifies truthfully," says Special Prosecutor Stan Levco, "we will recommend that she receives no jail time."

Morgan is scheduled to go on trial next month. In the meantime, there is speculation that the 2008 election could have turned out differently if not for crimes committed.

Bank it.

Less than 1% of the total vote.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_presidential_election_in_Indiana,_2008

Although this relates to the primary and not the general election (Hillary won the primary in Indiana; Obama was still the nominee and would still have been on the general election ballot).

I'll be lurking and helping out - I have a 4 year old car geek. He knows ALL the make and the model since he was 2.

And yes, he collects Hot Wheels/Matchbox and insists on looking over the cars before buying 'em so he doesn't have any duplicates.

He's that *smart*.

And he is trilingual. English, Hebrew (just started learning the language) and American Sign Language.

Make the best use of ASL to help communicate with the baby. My son has done well.

Common ASL words are: milk, food, sleep.

If push comes to shove, you announce it publically that you need more signature for the ballot petition and Democrats in Indiana drive from all over to sign the petition.

I mean, Obama won Indiana, so it shouldn't have been a problem to get the signatures. What it sounds like is that someone took the money to get the signatures and pocketed it. But that's just me speculating.

ETA: Wow, that news report wasn't really putting that information all together for clarity, was it? One county's ballot for the primary election, not the state and not the general. It will be fodder for the rightwing conspiracy crowd, though, and this article seems to be happy to take the page hits.

The news story is strangely worded, making it difficult to tell, but the voter fraud in question was in the primary, not the general election.

Also, the democratic county leader who is accused of committing fraud to get Obama's name on the ballot also did the same thing to get Clinton's name on the ballot, according to the article:

The forged signatures came from petitions for a candidate for governor and were placed on petitions for both Obama and Hillary Clinton, who won a narrow victory in the 2008 Indiana Democratic Primary. While that election is long over, Republicans still hope to take advantage of the voter fraud scandal.

Sat Mar 30, 2013, 10:39 PM
Mar 2013

weren't votes, just signatures. And went to both Clinton and Obama to get them both on the primary ballot? Clinton won the primary but lost the nomination. Then Obama went on to win the state in the general? If I've got it right then big whoop (with regard to President Obama winning). That any kind of tampering went on is a big deal, however, imo.

With honest and reasonably competent people handling things there is no doubt in my mind that the will of the people would have been executed and candidate Obama's name would have been on the ballot.

Democracy should equal the will of the people.

Still, in any democracy, the devil is in the details and the rule of law deserves respect. I'm hoping this isn't as bad as it could be.

Obama won in 2008 with 365 EC votes. Indiana only contributed 11 of those.

365-11= hmm...carry, the 1...no wait...oh hell, its still way the fuck more than the 270 minimum EC voted needed to win.

Did the forged names make a difference? It's possible some names were forged, but the # of names on the petition was enough over the limit for them not to make a difference.

Its fraud for a petition to put Obama's and Hillary's names on the primary ballot in one county. If Obama hadn't been on the ballot in that county it would have made no difference, since he lost the primary. The forgeries had no bearing at all on the final outcome of the general election.
