With the help of the GOP and corporate America the fundy churches believe they will eventually have their theocracy. They have been quite successful in pushing their agenda in various states. If you look at the legislative initiatives in total they are slowly able to pass laws the push the marriage of the Bible and state.
The inroads they have made in schools, with textbooks, and suppression of free speech are still moving forward under the radar. Vouchers is just an excuse to create a religious school system with their people teaching their theology and their version of a moral society. They are still infiltrating at many levels and getting their candidates in office. Every cycle we see a large number of mystery candidates whose real agenda is the take over of church policy over the secular state.
It is important to understand that the fundies are the most dangerous threat to democracy and not the terrorists. They themselves are the religious terrorists of our time. To think that they will not eventually become violent is to be naive. The most devoted gun nuts are religious white supremacists who believe they need their weapons to take down a dangerous godless socialist state.
As far as I am concerned we are dealing with people who are every bit as dangerous as a viper. We had better understand that they will not tolerate any resistance. All you have to do is look at what is happening in the red states where the GOP and its religious allies are in full control.
Eventually it will be us who believe in religion neutral democracy versus them.
