Hutaree defendants ask for free lodging, judge offers a jail cell
January 28, 2012
They wanted free lodging. The government offered a jail cell.
Three defendants in the Hutaree militia case who say they can't afford to pay for lodging during their upcoming terrorism trial won't be staying in a taxpayer-funded hotel, a judge ruled Friday.
U.S. District Judge Victoria Roberts said the government can't afford it, but could let the defendants stay at a local correctional facility and reimburse them for travel costs, but only one way.
The highly anticipated trial, in which eight accused militia members are charged with plotting a violent overthrow of the government, is set to start Feb. 7 and could last six to eight weeks. It begins nearly two years after the FBI busted the Lenawee-based militia group in a series of raids in Michigan and Ohio.

Surprised they didn't request the Presidential Suite at a Four Star hotel. With free room service included.
