Shouldn't the headline today have been "Romney embraces birther movement?"

Considering that he courted, repeatedly met with and sought Trump, then made a special flight to Vegas to stand with him.

It seems most of the coverage today has focused on Trump's not running, snubbing Gingrich, etc. But shouldn't the Democrats or folks in the media be making more an issue that Romney has decided to embrace the fringe of the right? Kind of goes against the image of a moderate, reasonable guy he's cultivating for the general.

Van Jones was run out of town on a rail for signing a petition regarding questions about the 9/11 account. But it seems that Mitt can court and embrace the king of the Birthers and not be called on it.

Can you imagine if President Obama made a special flight to appear with and seek the endorsement of the top 9/11 troofer movement people? You wouldn't hear the end of it for the rest of the election.

Romney should not get a pass on this, as much as the media wants to dismiss it as just that lovable Donald just being his wacky self again.

At the very least, Mitt should be called on to denounce the ugly, race-baiting lies Trump has brought to politics. His silence means we can only assume he is 100 percent comfortable with Trump's message and tactics.

when the real issue should be Romney's actions - in courting, accepting and appearing with Trump.

Mitt Romney's father was born in Mexico.

The there are currently SIX ballot challenges filed by nutty GOPers against President Obama at the moment (in Georgia and Texas) stating that Obama is not qualified to be on the ballot because his 'father' was not born in The USA.

Romney can't support the birthers on this this issue because the democrats would turn the issue around onto him and highlight the fact that his father was also not not born in the states.

p.s. I know that Mitt has publicly said that his father was born in Mexico, but he did so in passing and not as an attack against President Obama.
I predict we will not hear anything from Mitt on the birther issue

Other than the mundane observation that certain folks will always consider Mr. Obama to be "alien" in some respect, how is birtherism a "serious issue"?

At least not from a citizenship standpoint. George Romney's parents were both American citizens. George was born an American citizen, even if he was not actually born in America. At the time, Mexico had no dual citizenship, so foreign parents had to choose either Mexican citizenship or the citizenship of their home country. George's parents chose American citizenship for all of their children. They left Mexico for good when George was only five.

If both your parents are citizens, then you are a citizen too. Tim Tebow was born in the Philippines. Mike Judge (the creator of Beavis and Butthead) was born in Ecuador. Both of them were born to American parents and thus were born citizens like George Romney (Tebow's parents were missionaries, Judge's father worked for a non-profit).

Nixon nd and to a smaller extent Rockerfeller were using the issue of George Romney being born in Mexico ad how that might disqualify him from being president during the 1968 GOP primaries.
