Unemployment rate hits 8.3 % after hiring burst, employers added 243,000 non-farm jobs in January

Unemployment rate hits 8.3 pct. after hiring burst

By CHRISTOPHER S. RUGABER
AP Economics Reporter

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The unemployment rate fell for the fifth straight month after a surge of January hiring, a promising shift in the nation's outlook for job growth.

The Labor Department says employers added 243,000 jobs in January, the most in nine months. The unemployment rate dropped to 8.3 percent from 8.5 percent in December. That's the lowest in nearly three years.

Employers have added an average of 201,000 jobs per month in the past three months. That's 50,000 more jobs per month than the economy averaged in each month last year.

The January jobs report was filled with other encouraging data and revisions. Hiring was widespread across many high-paying industries. Pay increased. And the economy added 200,000 more jobs in 2011 than first thought.

absolutely no help from the Republican Congress. This recovery would be faster if they had pitched in. We need to keep driving that point home.

"In fact, the labor force participation rate fell to 63.7 percent in January from 64 percent in December, the lowest since January 1982, suggesting workers are still leaving the labor force.

A group of workers the Bureau of Labor Statistics labels "not in the labor force" -- because they have not looked for work in more than a month -- but who currently want a job, has risen by 1.66 million since the recession began. However, this number is lower than some economists' estimates. If those 1.66 million workers were added back to the civilian labor force, then the unemployment rate would jump to 9.2 percent."

unemployment will be at or below the level it was at when President Obama took office by the time of the election. One less issue to have to contend with.

Unemployment in January 2009 was 7.8%. If it keeps dropping at the rate of 0.1-0.2%/month (it was 8.5% last month), Obama will be able to run on a lower unemployment rate than when he took office. Fingers crossed!
