There have been some good pieces written analyzing what has happened with the Susan G. Komen Foundation's huge mistake to cut off funding to Planned Parenthood for cancer screenings. One worth reading is Kivi's post, the Accidental Rebranding of Komen for the Cure.
My personal thoughts on this are no secret, but I'd like to dissect how Komen for the Cure completely destroyed a brand 3 decades in the making and how they're now a different organization with a different future (if they even have one), whether they like it or not. My goal here is to help people understand this so you don't make the same mistakes.
A lot of people have been writing that Komen didn't have a communications strategy and that was their problem. Well that was one problem. Others include a complete lack of understanding of the Internet, how news spreads during a news cycle, and the temperature of progressive activists after a lot of backsliding on this issue specifically, and more generally with things learned from the ACORN fight. But the biggest issue is they completely changed their mission without even realizing it.
The mission departure
There has been plenty of controversy from Komen to date ranging from accusations they are denying links to cancer because of donations they receive to suing smaller organizations for using "for the cure" in their marketing. But they've weathered it because they've remained focused on what is and should be a completely non-partisan cause -- preventing, treating and curing breast cancer. They've attracted women and men of all political stripes and backgrounds to their cause. It was a safe place for corporations to support the cause. Komen's board thought they were simply cutting off a grant, for what many believe to be ideological reasons driven by Karen Handel, but what they were really doing is changing their entire mission. By taking a side in the abortion debate they essentially decided: we only want to work with men and women on the anti-abortion side of the debate, cutting off at least 50% if not more of their support.

This is an excellent examination the Komen mess. Chances are, no matter what happens, the Komen brand is toast.

(22,871 posts)life with saving boobs. I wonder how a woman who survived breast cancer though a life saving masectomy is supposed to feel about this? Appartently, losing your boobs is the equivelent to losing your life to these assholes.

(24,096 posts)its so sexist I can't believe it. it says that breasts are there for men's pleasure and if you are disfigured with cancer then you won't be getting any of those orgasms now, will you, cuz one of the pieces that defines you as a person is no longer there.
really disturbing, or am I being too 'sensitive'?

(22,871 posts)probably accuse you of it. The ad was actually concieved by a Canadian woman who has apparently never had to be thankful that a masectomy saved a loved one or herself. It's an incredible slap in the face to any woman who is now alive but living without her all important breasts.

(24,096 posts)geeze that's gross, wtf are people thinking, or are they?
breast cancer is about pain and fear and worrying about your family not about some jerkoffs oogling boobs.
i give up. for a while.

Thanks for posting this. After watching the video of the courageous and beautiful Linda posted in another thread, this ad is SO antithetical to the real issue of "what breast cancer is and what it is not" as Linda clearly states.

(4,193 posts)This one was produced by "savetheboobs.webs.com" which might be the most eye-gougingly unreadable website in geocities history, and this boobtuber even managed to misspell the word "last" ("Lasy year over 40,000 women..."
Btw, the Canadian referenced upthread was responsible for a different ad (by the same name) on behalf of "Rethink Breast Cancer", although the other ad also suffers from a certain titillation factor.

(18,619 posts)The organization has a internal growth that has been rendered dormant for now, but without invasive surgery the cancer could return anytime to spread through the charity. Even after removing the dangerous RW growth, chances of survival are less than 50/50.
The real victim here is the good done by SGK in raising awareness to a serious illness. Because of bad decisions made by what have been proven to be grossly overpaid executives, that torch has likely fallen forever. Few people even knew (or cared) of the connection to Planned Parenthood before this week.
Way to go dumbasses. Thanks for nothing.

(392 posts)but i do hope that fences get mended to the point where there is no delay in a cure for breast cancer, no matter how it gets there, whether through this organization or another.
I lost an aunt to this and I dont wish that on any of you ladies or any other women in your life

More long term and basic, to understand why Komen always talks about the cure, never about prevention, go to the link below.
You'll see Komen's record of denying that cancer has environmental causes, pink-washing cancer-causing corporations that are Komen supporters, and lobbying against such needed but Republican-opposed legislation as the Breast and Cervical Cancer bill -- and more.
Those are the long term reasons I've never walked a step with Komen. If you do know a good group that Komen is supporting, why not give it money directly?

(102,141 posts)We need foundations that keep a focus on the goal and don't get caught up in the spectacle of the whole thing--the media hype, accolades and personal benefits.

(19,348 posts)Remember, the Komen foundation does NOT support stem cell research. If the Komen Foundation wishes to be led by theocratic principles, let them beg the megachurches for funds.
