Karen Handel on opensecrets

OPensecrets.org lists Karen Handel as a lobbyist. It lists her fer as Susan G Komen for the Cure, and her client as Susan G Komen for the Cure.

Their lobbying expenses begin in '98, and they quickly ratchet up to $200k a year, until '03, when they start spending over 300k a year, and it jumps again in '07, when they start spenging close to 600k a year. Last year they spent $710 k: their peak year as, surprise, '08, when they spent even more than that.

This past year, they paid 96k to Foley Hoag LLP, a firm that takes health care (read, mainly corporate) clients.

In addition to Handel, opensecrets also lists Allison Cohen, Matthew Moore as registered lobbyists in their employ.

They also reported spending $260,000 lobbying on the patient protection and affordable care act, with Handel and Moore acting on behalf of the "client." The document lists Handel's covered position as "Special Assistant and Deputy Chief of Staff to Marilyn Quayle."

What really seems mind-bogglingly stupid is that Handel apparently did not think how Komen donors would react. I am sure many of their donors are women, the majority of whom are pro-choice, and probably didn't know that Komen employs Handel, the former Deputy Chief of Staff for Marilyn Quayle, as a VP and lobbyist. I bet that most folks did not know that Komen pays her $500 k a year.

That's outrageous. Cancer patients deserve better: that money ought to go to the cause, not the pockets of someone in the 1%.

this is looking more and more like a cover for repub issues and less like a charity that cares about curing breast cancer.

Thanks for posting this.

The same relatively small number of names keeps coming up in so many scams, cover-ups, etc., it certainly makes me go hmmmm. what else are they involved in?
