Not Cocaine, get your mind out of the 80's.
Denver area, 14" so far and no signs of slowing down!
But that's not why I am posting. Early this morning I was outside digging out my car. It was snowing, freezing cold and miserable. I was about half way through the driveway when lo and behold, coming down the street I see.... The Garbage Truck. Over a foot of snow, under 20 degrees and my trash company is still out there hitting it.
I ran inside to grab my trash, I didn't expect them because of the snow. I grabbed the two bags and a pot of coffee and ran back outside. I handed off the trash, refilled their coffee, made small talk for a sec and they went on their way. I then set about finishing the driveway (by the time I was done it was already covered again). When I came inside, freezing and exhausted I sat and thought about the two guys on that truck. I was out there an hour at the most, and damn glad I didn't have to go back out. Those poor guys are probably still at it.
So I sit here thinking about the Candidates, talking about "lazy Americans", and "hard work", while they are riding around the country in million dollar tour buses, and living off of DONATIONS from people like my garbage men who worked harder today than any of them probably have their whole lives.
I'm trying to put a final point on this, but I can't seem to come up with anything simple. I guess I just felt like in 21st Century America where hard work is rewarded by low pay, stolen pensions, salary cuts, benefit cuts, and shitty working conditions, and getting rich off the backs of others is rewarded with low taxes, deregulation, and immunity to criminal prosecutions, these poor dudes deserved some recognition...

(102,217 posts)well.
Funny, though that ours is clearly a spring snow kind of dump. It never really got lower than the mid to upper 20s and it was the heavy kind of stuff that you can just push off the car with a small snow shovel. I had no problem getting out and running some errands.
Oh, looks like its started up again, so maybe I spoke too soon.
Let's hear it for Denver's dedicated crews though. Absolutely.

(4,876 posts)because this is the first serious snow we've had. All last week it was high 50's and low 60's. And it's been like that most of this winter.

That was the deal killer.
Sorry, that was really off topic.
Yeah, I understand what you're sayin'.

(4,876 posts)However did you know that Colorado is the state with the most Sunshine? We average 300 days a year of sunshine, more than Florida. Also our average yearly temp is 50.. I moved here from Florida in 1990 and don't ever plan on leaving unless it's to immigrate to another country..
Of course I was cursing the gods this morning when I was shoveling a foot of snow

(1,124 posts)Seriously though, I want to thank you for your post and your kindness in thinking to grab a hot pot of coffee. I wonder if I would have even thought to do that in my mad dash to get my garbage.
I had the same sort of thoughts about the candidates yesterday evening while making a quick stop in a store on South Broadway. Of course the homeless were beginning to gather there beside the strip mall as many are wont to do every evening and it just broke my heart. Here are American men and women, some of them elderly, wearing everything they own and news of a big snow storm getting ready to hit Denver and no home to live in. Some friggin' safety net .... Makes me feel so damn helpless because what more can you do beside give them something to eat and wish them well for the night.

(9,978 posts)Been there, done that. It's actually a nice job, except for maybe 10 days a year wen the weather sucks a dirty snowball. And it's kind folks like you who make it that way.
