Never mind that Mittens was hopeless before. Mere employees can't be allowed to outshine the boss.

Mitt Romney splits with Brett ODonnell
By JONATHAN MARTIN and MAGGIE HABERMAN | 2/3/12 6:25 PM EST
-snip-
I think you can expect advisers to think that the work of advisers is very, very important, but frankly, I think if youre to go back and look at where the sentiment changed, it was with the debates, Romney told Matt Lauer.
And several sources in and close to the Romney camp said there had been deep consternation internally over the press ODonnell received and the preemptive, how-we-did-it Times story, which quoted Romney adviser Russ Schriefer among others.
The piece, said one campaign insider, made the candidate himself seem like an afterthought in reviving his own campaign.
The campaign held a conference call this week, multiple sources said, in which a clear message was delivered Romney pulled himself back from the brink after South Carolina, and no one else did it for him.
-snip-
Emphasis added.
As the Politico article points out, "there are egos at work when it comes to doling out credit" and that "starts with the candidate."

as they say debate winners is based on expectations.
Newt was expected to full something similar to SC and he didn't so they claimed Romney won. but Santorum isthe one who actually did well. Romney came off as nervous and desperate.

the campaign was afraid of Romney looking weak if anyone was given credit for helping him, has now made Romney look vain and petty...and weak. These folks are a joy to watch.
