(50,528 posts)Richard Nixon was as evil as the day is long, which goes to show you how fucked this country actually is: as bad as he was, we've got Republicans now who are far worse.

(336 posts)I doubt Nixon gave that much of a shit about the environment or infrastructure, but there was general bi-partisan consensus that they were good things, so their was nothing to be gained by trashing them.

(50,528 posts)Nixon knew, as all politicians did back then, that infrastructure projects created jobs, jobs create happy voters and happy voters tend to keep re-electing incumbents.
Now that we have teabaggers running the show in the GOP, the idea is that we DON'T spend on infrastructure. We don't spend the money to fix the bridge, the bridge falls in killing a bunch of people in the process, and the GOP blames the Democrats.
My favorite teabaggers are the ones in Central Washington. I print the biggest paper in Central Washington, and from it I have learned that the middle of the state is full of teabaggers who believe the government never has done anything good for the people. Now, understand, Central Washington is a desert, but thanks to the Bonneville Power Administration, a government-run corporation, it's possible to farm there. If it wasn't for the federal government's cheap irrigation and cheap electricity the only things that would be living in Central Washington are jackrabbits and coyotes, but the feds are evil and useless.

(1,831 posts)Though force can protect in emergency, only justice, fairness, consideration and cooperation can finally lead men to the dawn of eternal peace.
I hate war as only a soldier who has lived it can, only as one who has seen its brutality, its futility, its stupidity.
Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, signifies in the final sense a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed.
If the United Nations once admits that international disputes can be settled by using force, then we will have destroyed the foundation of the organization and our best hope of establishing a world order.
All by Dwight David Eisenhower. America's second to the last 5 star General.

Roger Waters is using that quote during "The Wall Live" shows. It's projected on the Wall during the song "Bring THe Boys Back Home".
It's an amazing moment in an amazing show...

A very insightful man. Who has definitely been there, and done that.

(2,552 posts)There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes that you can do these things. Among them are a few Texas oil millionaires, and an occasional politician or businessman from other areas. Their number is negligible and they are stupid." ─President Dwight D. Eisenhower
Hmmm,,, He sounds just like one of those "darned socialists" that the GOP always whines about.
" a few Texas Oil Millionaires"
I wonder who he meant by that...?!

(8,994 posts)It's the Plutocrat party.
After all, the Democrat party is NOT what it was pre-1964.
Honestly, Democrats died in 1865. What we have now is the New Democrat, or Enlightened Democrat Party.

(917 posts)Are you referring to the Democratic Party?
Zalatix
(8,994 posts)It is nothing like what it was before 1964... much less back in 1865.
You can argue, in fact, that the Dems and Repubs switched souls on a number of issues, starting with race.

(2,424 posts)I can't recall the "old school" journalist's name he was interviewing, but the guy was a former presidential press secretary, from Texas, and a Republican. Any help out there on the name? Any one else see it?
Regardless, I recall him saying that "Barry Goldwater would never support the agenda of the modern Republican Party". Back in the 60's, Goldwater lost his presidential bid because he was considered much too conservative for his time.
