Teen describes killing as ‘pretty enjoyable’ experience

JEFFERSON CITY -- A Missouri teenager who admitted stabbing, strangling and slitting the throat of a young neighbor girl wrote in her journal on the night of the killing that it was an “ahmazing” and “pretty enjoyable” experience — then headed off to church with a laugh.

The words written by Alyssa Bustamante were read aloud in court Monday as part of a sentencing hearing to determine whether she should get life in prison or something less for the October 2009 murder of her neighbor, 9-year-old Elizabeth Olten, in a small town west of Jefferson City.

The most poignant part of Monday’s testimony came when a handwriting expert described how he was able to see through the blue ink that Bustamante had used in an attempt to cover up her original journal entry on the night of Elizabeth’s murder. He then read the entry aloud in court:

“I just (expletive) killed someone. I strangled them and slit their throat and stabbed them now they’re dead. I don’t know how to feel atm. It was ahmazing. As soon as you get over the ‘ohmygawd I can’t do this’ feeling, it’s pretty enjoyable. I’m kinda nervous and shaky though right now. Kay, I gotta go to church now...lol.”

This is the first I've heard of this case, to be honest. I'm surprised that it didn't get more national attention--a crime this brutal, by a teenager who is female, is a rare enough thing. Then, to have the teen describe the commission of the act as 'enjoyable' is even more unusual. Maybe I missed the coverage, but I would have thought that the news and 'true crime' shows would have been all over this case.

I did have a brief period of time when I was "off TV" so maybe I just missed it....?

Major loose screws there. Maybe she should be in a mental institution for life instead of prison, but no, she shouldn't be returned to freedom.

However the maximum penalty she is going to get is life with parole, so she will be returned to walk amongst us again. What a glorious prospect.

She could get 10 years, in which case she'd be back out by the time she is 28 or 29. Even if she gets the maximum sentence, she'll probably be free by the time she's in her forties.

I think the rule is that you should only get one thrill-kill, even if you exercise that option in your teens.

Some people are not made "wrong." Some people call them sociopaths, some evil, but you cannot rehab them, because you can't change a personality disorder.
