RW nutjob Charles Murray's "Do you live in a bubble?" quiz

http://www.pbs.org/newshour/rundown/2012/03/white-educated-and-wealthy-congratulations-you-live-in-a-bubble.html

Interesting questions. I got 77: "A lifelong resident of a working-class neighborhood with average television and movie going habits." which is more or less accurate except for the past few years, but then again they didn't ask about my Netflix queue...

(NB: Murray is an absolute right-wing hack; this is posted as a hint of what conservatives think "mainstream" means)

Or does city living mean you are in a bubble?

This entire concept is b.s. and is full of holes. It lacks critical thinking. I'm out of the loop because I don't regularly plug in to watch a bunch of lame television shows? Whatever...

Oh yeah, and I never eat at Chilis or Applebees so that means I don't know what's going on with Real Americans. What a steaming pantload of tripe.

I'm not taking it seriously. I like living out here, out of the loop, and watching high-brow fare on the teevee. LOL

(I never eat at those places either-- too far to drive.)

Maybe I'm in an irritable mood, but it annoys me off that this dweeb gets to be the arbiter of who is a Real American (I know he doesn't say it like that, but that is exactly what he means). Oh yeah, like there's so much I'm missing out on by not being able to discuss what's on the Applebees menu.
I'm not actually mad, I just think this guy is full of shit and so is his test.

But apparently he thought I should have gotten a 5 because the decription fit me better.

Probably massively screwed up his system by being born of two parents with graduate degrees yet chose to live in a blue collar neighborhood (for economic reasons).

how does this quiz advance Charles Murray's agenda? What exactly is his agenda?

It reminds me a lot of David Brooks's amateur demographics, but Murray's propaganda is a ton more sophisticated than Brooks's.

Though Cowen and Yglesias both have some interesting arguments from the past few days that the closest thing to "mainsteam America" is a regional city like Knoxville or Jacksonville, FL.

A second-generation (or more) upper-middle-class person who has made a point of getting out a lot. Typical: 9.

Except I prefer to think of myself as "educated and thoughtful". Of course I would, wouldn't I?

Weird stuff that I don't take seriously. I don't drink beer very often and never smoke so those questions were a bust...Jimmie/y Johnson...didn't know or care about the spelling, but knew one was race cars and the other coached Dallas, know that Branson is in Missouri and big time money guy, we have hovered above the poverty line while teaching for 13 years. Live in rural NC, best friend is opposite party then me, and we have lively debates and are still best buds. Have served in the military and worked construction and brick factory floor where I hurt all day every day after my shift during college days. Seldom watch major network tv, I know some of those shows, but never watch them. We have direct tv where I watch the stuff I'm interested in, netflix is my pal.....Interesting little quiz
