I am, of course, unhappy that the minimum law did not pass.
But, would background check have prevented Columbine? Aurora? Tuscon? Sandy Hook? Perhaps Virginia Tech, not sure.
I really wish they would go after assault weapon - whatever that means - after loaded clips that can discharge many rounds in seconds.
Perhaps this should be the topic of discussion. And then see what the excuses are for the opponents.

(31,484 posts)If universal background checks can't pass, we don't have a chance in hell of getting even more stringent gun control passed. I have contacted my Senators and let them know my feelings on gun control and my disappointment in their votes on the universal background checks. I've only heard back from the Rep. who gave me a carefully worded "there, there, little lady, don't you worry about this". I reminded Senator Pryor that I would remember his vote on this issue when I went to the voting booth, but I haven't received a reply from him as yet.

Like the "grand bargain" perhaps we do need to go the crux of the matter and then see how they explain it.
