The plant is the Cannabis plant. The buds that are smoked or turned into edibles are Cannabis buds.

If you ever see the term "Marijuana", you're looking at propaganda on behalf of the opponents of legalization. This is not to say that everyone using that term knows this, but this is an attempt at clarification and edification. Cannabis is a medicinal plant, "marijuana" is the stuff in "reefer madness" that makes men go crazy and rape little girls. Bullshit propaganda, in other words.

Thanks for this post and the attempt to rectify this misunderstanding. Cannabis is a medicine that saves cancer fighters from a hellish existence of naseau, vomiting and chronic pain. Cannabis helps to fight wasting disorders that are part of so many chemotherapy treatments.
Marinol is a synthetic equivalent given to cancer patients in states without medicinal cannabis rights. Marinol only works for a very small number of cancer fighters- for others it causes agitiation, anxiety and headaches; just the thing a cancer fighter needs to have to deal with. Marinol is the government's and anti cannabis organizations excuse for standing by while thier fellow Americans suffer in horror and pain. Every oncologist I have ever spoken to about the medicinal application of cannabis is in favor of the law. It seems that the only people against it are the same right wing fundamentalist crowd that applauded the death of an uninsured man in the republican convention of 2012.
