Karen Handel, the politically embattled former vice president of public affairs for Susan G. Komen for the Cure, has broken her silence about her role in the breast cancer charity's decision to defund Planned Parenthood and her decision to step down from her post.
"First of all, I clearly acknowledge that I was involved in the process," she said. "But to suggest that I had the sole authority is just absurd. The process was vetted. The policies were vetted at all the appropriate levels in the organization."
Handel's statement directly contradicts what Komen executives have been telling the public since the decision was announced last week.
"Karen did not have anything to do with this decision," Komen founder Nancy Brinker told MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell on Thursday. "This was decided at the board level and also by our mission."

(82,849 posts)But gee whiz, poor Karen! Simply cut funding for lifesaving medical diagnosis and treatment and it provokes vicious attacks! How utterly distressing it must be. Ms. Handel probably had to lie down on her fainting couch for an extra long session, thinking about how all those mean women were bad-mouthing her for endangering their lives. Probably had to use her best clutching pearls, too!
Don't you libruls have any empathy at all???

(37,540 posts)That's cool...no one in my family will be supporting the Komen Foundation anymore. Lets see how well they do with their RW base who never fund 'socialist' programs like research for womens' health issues.

(285 posts)...helping, that is, to shine a gulag-sized spotlight on the RW front group that had generally been understood to be a high-profile and respectable research-focused charity.
I haven't trusted SGK since I learned that Nancy Brinker was a Bush Pioneer. Something about that worried me, but I hoped in earnest that the organization was large enough to maintain their focus despite one key person's politics.
But no, their top players were apparently all of the same stripe. That's what Brinker is foolishly confirming in trying to cover for Handel.
I saw additional details in today's Boston Globe where Handel sprayed her vicious funk on just about everyone high up in SGK. So it really matters no more if Handel was solely at fault or not. Handel takes the fall, and is now barking away on Fox keeping the issue front and center. If SGK were smart, they'd tell her to shut up. But like any self-righteous RW'er, she's been exposed and cornered, and doesn't care who she takes down with her. Nice. And here I was all these years thinking they cared about women with breast cancer...
