Police: Teen arrested after housekeeper finds explosive device in room
Joshua Prater, 18, was arrested after a housekeeper found a suspicious device while cleaning Prater's room, police say.
The woman reportedly brought the device to the Tempe (Arizona) Fire Department, which called the city's bomb squad to examine it. The device turned out to be an active improvised explosive device (IED), azfamily.com reports.
"They had it X-rayed, they saw it was a valid IED," Tempe Police Sgt. Mike Pooley said, according to MyFoxPhoenix.com. "It was something that wasn't big, but could cause serious injuries and the death of someone."
Via azfamily.com:
"There was fuse that was coming out from the device which would be how you light it and it would cause the fuse to go in there and explode," Pooley said. "The bomb was ready to go. It was active. All it needed was the trigger."

Not anymore.
Sad, but maybe it was as he said. It doesn't matter now whether it was a real threat or just an experiment. The record will show this and his life is probably ruined.

Potato shooters will be a felony now.

(13,485 posts)The things I used to make as a kid were crazy. It's amazing I am still alive and have all my moving parts intact. Not for a moment did I think about using such a thing for more than making a big noise or a lot of sparks... or maybe shooting up a rocket. I used to take C rocket engines attach a long stick and glue an M80 or a cherry bomb on the top. It would go up 2000 feet and explode. Man, you couldn't do that now I would suppose. Then there's the coffee can with a spark plug screwed into it, then a couple of drops on gasoline on the concrete, can on top, wired to a battery and boom, it would blow the can to smithereens and the spark plug would end up who know where. Of course, this was all out on a farm.
Am I still allowed to say this stuff? I really don't know.

use a paper clip to mix powder with an ink tube from a pen.. Ink sparkler... make sure the vice principle is not coming into the bathroom just after you set the thing off.
I took a box of half used flash bulbs from a box my dad had and took all the magnesium out of them which I put into a pile and lit off with a nine volt battery and some wire. Lost my color vision for a good 20 minutes.

(13,485 posts)When I ran out of M80s once, I emptied the silver solute of hundreds of firecrackers and stuffed it into the used center cardboard rolls from a cash register and fused it. It made a hole in the ground some 6 inches deep and more than a foot around. It was so loud the cows didn't milk for a couple of days. I got in trouble with my uncle for that one. Yeah, I was an idiot.
