Couple fall overboard from Carnival cruise ship
A couple aboard a Carnival Cruise Lines cruise ship have gone overboard in waters off Australia, and are missing, the Miami-based cruise line confirmed in a statement Thursday.
The Carnival Spirit returned to port in Sydney earlier in the day without the couple, who according to reports, were last spotted the night before.
Heres Carnivals statement on the incident:
May 9 2013 - 9:05 a.m. EDT
We have naturally been concerned since we became aware that two passengers were missing from Carnival Spirit and our thoughts are clearly with their families at this difficult time. We are working closely with New South Wales Police and assisting them in their inquiries. At approximately 9:15am today Australia time during the debarkation process for Carnival Spirit at the conclusion of a 10-night cruise in Sydney, it became apparent that two guests, a 26-year-old woman and a 30-year-old man, were unaccounted for. The guests in question were traveling with family and friends and initial reports indicate that the couple was last seen onboard the vessel last night. As part of our standard protocol, a full ship search was conducted as well as examination of closed circuit video. There is indication from the shipboard video of what transpired. There is no evidence of foul play. However, out of respect for the families, we are not going to publicly disclose the details of what occurred at this time.

(20,440 posts)I already don't ever want to set foot on one of those death traps.
Add to that the fact that people go out and don't return, and I can't believe anyone gets on one.
There are hundreds of great caribbean resorts where you can actually get into the water on a beautiful shoreline.
I'll never see the attraction.

(17,029 posts)I keep getting different news stories... some say they "flung" themselves over and that the cameras on the ship caught it?
Weird story anyway...

(8 posts)"Det Supt Hutchings said the CCTV images indicated the pair went overboard from a deck about halfway up the ship's side, but added it was too early to say whether they jumped or fell overboard.
He did not rule out the possibility of a suicide pact. The CCTV footage was very unclear. But it does depict one person going over and then a short time another person going over, said Det Supt Hutchings. We can't tell from the footage which is which.'

I hope they are found alive, what a terrifying experience.

(3,118 posts)- as the railing is really high, close to armpit height if you're short. You'd have to be goofing off - standing on a deck chair - totally drunk - or trying to commit suicide to have two people "fall" off one after the other.
I've been on three different cruise lines and the railings are high on all of them. This story doesn't pass the smell test.

(11,785 posts)I wonder if they were trying to re-enact that scene from Titanic.

The comfort for the family should be that they died instantly. Falling into water at a great height (and those ships are damned high) is like hitting pavement. And if my guess is correct, they barely felt it when they did.
It's still just incredibly sad, especially for friends and family still on board who are likely full of "what ifs."

(110,903 posts)I know somebody who actually did that cliff dive. He said he'd only do it once, it felt like his head was going to shoot out his asshole.

(8 posts)The balcony didn't have rails to climb, it is one of those full length glass types.
I wonder if they were standing on chairs?
Then maybe murder/suicide? Double suicide?
That's even worse. More "what ifs" for the family.

(8 posts)The revelation that Mr Rossington had instinctively jumped after Ms Schroder came as police called off the search for the NSW couple who plunged to their deaths on Wednesday night. While NSW police said publicly yesterday that they were still reviewing CCTV footage of the incident, it is understood that the families of the missing couple have been told there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the incident.
"Paul was trying to save her," a source who asked not to be identified told AAP.
The footage is believed to show Ms Schroder, 27, going over the balcony a moment before 30-year-old Mr Rossington went after her.
The navy, NSW police and Australian Maritime Safety Authority last night suspended their search of a 171,000ha expanse off NSW's north coast where the couple fell from the Carnival Spirit about 8.50pm on Wednesday.
