Went to opening day of the community's Farmers Market and yes ELVIS was their...seriously...lol
Anyhow ran across an old member of a church my wife and I once belong to. We visited for a bit then he asked me if I was the same RSmith that was writing for the local paper in which I said, yes it is, do you like what I say. Anyhow that led into a discussion about the affairs of the city in which we agreed on most issues.
He went on and on and bitched up a storm equal to Katrina about how bad the leaders of the community are. I said, WELL, nothing gets done sitting on your couch at home reading the local paper, you have to get in their face.
Then he said something that just delighted me with glee... He said if we had more conservative republicans on the council we would be doing much better. I then responded by saying The Mayor and six of the seven members are conservative republicans, just how much better would one more conservative make it and then said everyone of them are the problem...
It was like Mastercard. A PRICELESS moment just watching him stammer for words to say clearly.
Slam Dunk on the uninformed.

Best to you, Jennifer (another reason I wouldn't have cajones). Although you never know these days. I think I'll ask Skinner if I can change my "handle" or whatever they're called these days, good buddy!

Yet I have seldom seen this shake anybody up enough that they stop swallowing the propaganda whole and begin to question things a little more. I've seldom seen epiphanies. Doesn't mean they don't happen. Andrew Sullivan comes to mind, for example. The Media Matters guy, David Brock, is another. There are some. And, I HOPE AND PRAY, more awakening all the time.

(12,799 posts)That is, this gentleman and others like him might be caught off-guard by the facts with which you present them, but when it comes time to vote the bums out they could very well tell themselves, "Well, sure, the last mayor and most of the council were Republicans, but they must not have been REAL Republicans 'cuz they were worthless... so I'll vote in these new Republicans that are running and everything will be just fine."
And when those new Republicans turn out to be just as bad as the old Republicans, these conservative voters will tell themselves once more, "Well, dang, they weren't real conservative Republicans either! We need some REAL conservatives in the city government!" And they'll march back to the voting booth convinced that the new new Republican candidates will do a better job (or believing that any old new Republicans seeking re-election are sincere and reformed).
And they'll be wrong again, and they won't know why.
I hope your old acquaintance realizes that Republican grandstanding and economic theory and class warfare is all bullshit, rather than just concluding that the current crop of conservative pols on the council are simply "not conservative enough."
Keep beatin' the drum, and good luck with your elections!

(6,942 posts)...That is what we mostly agree on where our Mayor and council run as non-partisan.
Local issues are where most people agree. they are a different animals then national issues.
