Leaders' greed (for power, wealth, property, resources, etc.) seems the more likely culprit. Religion would be the excuse that provides the facade necessary to the coercion of military force. Or not.

It just seems that some rather heinous stuff goes on with the expectation that a religious label will somehow make it acceptable. Does anyone anywhere believe that Dick Cheney was guided by deeply held religious beliefs when he ginned up the Iraq war? Or is it more likely that there was an earthier and more profitable purpose? He really couldn't put a Christian shine on that mess, so they orchestrated a patriotic catechism that demanded demonization of Muslims, collateral damage be damned. And maybe that kind of thing is Cheney's religion, which brings us back around to square one, eh?
