(5,252 posts)I found the woman's underreaction baffling. I would be surprised if it didn't knock down houses.

Otherwise - unstoppable force meets shoddy stick-framed track home = nothing left but the foundation.
I like how she is so surprised when a door caves in.
"OMG! call someone!!!"
Who are you gonna call? Aquaman?
Maybe three or four fast thinking people with front loaders could save a couple houses but there are never three or four front loaders around when you need them. Otherwise, call the fire department to get gas and electric shut off to the neighborhood to mitigate some damage.

(18,539 posts)~40 mph. It pushes the ice until it hits the shore. The wave action of the open water behind the ice continues underneath until it also reaches the shore where it lifts the ice just a little. Since the wind is still pushing, the wave's upheaval of the ice allows it to move onto shore. repetition pushes it father from the water.
I did not see this one in person but have been at other lakes when it has happened. It is very impressive, cool and one of the most freaky things I have ever seen.

(26,219 posts)apparently this happens when the lake water begins to warm and the ice has no where to go? Regardless, that was one creepy video.

(18,539 posts)yes, you described it exactly. The ice sheet is floating free so goes where the wind pushes it. If the wind it strong enough it can move inland a short way. Usually only a few yards; I have never seen a heave like this before.
kstp.com is the station that has the video and some picture sent with the damage it caused

(26,219 posts)See post 18 - it apparently happened in Canada this weekend as well. Odd - I had never heard of this and now there are 2 incidents in a weekend. Frightening.
Is there nothing that can be done to push the ice back when this is happening? I see they brought in a bulldozer, but the damage was already done.

(18,539 posts)The lakes I saw this happen had low hills that stopped the ice.
I will be up near there in a couple days. If the roads are open I may go and see.

(26,219 posts)A local state of emergency has been declared in a western Manitoba municipality after homes in Ochre Beach were destroyed and seriously damaged by a wave of lake ice.
Area officials told CBC News the wind pushed built-up ice off Dauphin Lake on Friday evening and caused it to pile up in the community, located on the lake's southern shore.
The piles of ice, which were more than nine metres tall in some cases, destroyed at least six homes and cottages, according to the Rural Municipality of Ochre River.
