Sarah Palin is an absolutely terrible role model for young women and for mothers.

In case you missed the Big News(!), Sarah's daughter Willow, age 19, just "graduated" from beauty school in Phoenix, Arizona. Sarah used the occasion to discourage young people from pursuing four year college degrees and sanctimoniously preached:

"Follow your dreams, by all means. But don’t be blind to the fact that your dreams might be achieved outside of acquiring an outrageously expensive traditional college degree. Do not be lulled into thinking that good jobs grow on trees or that the government will somehow take care of you."

“She’ll be graduated this week with no debt and a great career ahead of her doing something she loves in a recession-proof industry (everyone needs their hair cut after all!),” the Tea Party darling asserted.

As to Sarah's stated disapproval that anyone expects the government to take care of them, check out this report re her older daughter, Bristol, and Bristol's failed TV series glorifying unwed teen motherhood.

Sarah Palin's daughter mooched $300k+ in subsidies from government for TV show

Failed vice-presidential candidate and disgraced self-terminated Alaskan half-term governor Sarah Palin is staunchly against big government spending, except when that spending is related to her family. According to the newly revealed financial documents, reported by newsminer.com, it was found that Alaskan taxpayers subsidized Sarah's daughter, Bristol Palin, and her now canceled Lifetime show "Bristol Palin: Life's a Tripp" to the tune of $354,348.

This funding for the television debacle was possible through the Alaskan Film Office, whose stated mission is to lure movie crews to Alaska with the promise of tax rebates, and transferable tax credits. Since the tax credits are transferable, a production company may resell the credits to other businesses who the tax credits were not originally intended for.

The flop that was "Bristol Palin: Life's a Tripp" ran a full 14 episodes, but was near-unanimously rejected by viewers. A second season is not in production nor being contemplated, much to the luck of the pocketbook of the taxpayer.

Finally, a shout out to Sarah, who has proven in so many ways, and with each of her children, what a crappy excuse she is for a mother, to edumacate herself on the health hazards for workers in beauty salons:

Getting toxic chemicals out of nail and beauty salons.

As we discussed on this site in March, there are many dangerous chemicals in salons which threaten the health of stylists, manicurists and the like. In the absence of federal oversight of chemicals like formaldehyde in cosmetics, some states are attempting to take on regulation of these products. This year, the state of New York introduced a bill which would prohibit the sales of nail products containing formaldehyde, toluene, and dibutyl phthalate—chemicals which are associated with respiratory trouble, endocrine and central nervous system disruption.

Hair straighteners and nail polishes: posing a risk for salon workers.

When Molly Scrutton, a hair stylist in Oregon, started experiencing respiratory and other health issues in 2010, she began to look into the Brazilian Blowout product, a heat-activated straightening chemical used in salons. Scrutton had the product tested and researchers found high levels of formaldehyde in the product, which is an extreme irritant to the eyes, nose and throat.

Two years after the initial findings, the manufacturers of Brazilian Blowout agreed to put a warning on the product about the hazards of formaldehyde and the need to use the product in a well-ventilated area.5 However, this only came after California and Oregon took legal action against the company.

Similarly, nail polishes and hardeners contain several toxic chemicals, called the "toxic trio," which present a problem less for women who use them once every couple of weeks, and more for salon workers who are exposed to the chemicals on a daily basis. The toxic trio is a group of three toxic chemicals that are often found in nail products: formaldehyde, toluene which is associated with negative effects to the central nervous system,6 and dibutyl phthalate which is associated with endocrine system disruption. Nail salon workers are often young immigrant women, and studies have shown that they have a greater prevalence of respiratory, skin problems and headaches when compared with the general population.7

After consumer group pressure, some companies have agreed to remove this toxic trio of chemicals from their products in the past few years. And the state of New York is working to make their removal mandatory with a proposed law, AB 1473, which would prohibit the manufacture, distribution and sale of nail polish and nail hardener containing any of the toxic trio. The law is currently in committee.

Elsewhere Sarah refers to her daughter having her own salon. Obviously, as in the Romney school of parenting, if you need money, just ask your parents. The Palins can pay to set her up in a salon, where she can employ others to work. She will make a lot more as the owner of a salon then as a hairdresser. As always with Sarah, the devil is in the details.

And I agree with another poster, that hairdressing is not recession-proof. Many women I know have stopped going to a salon and color their own hair. And for many years when on a tight budget, I cut my own and my kids' hair.

"recession proof". many beauty salons had to close because of the bad economy. many women cut and color their own hair to save money.
