Please join me in THANKING the President for his ADULT handling of the IRS catastrophe

Last edited Tue May 14, 2013, 07:06 AM - Edit history (1)

As we all know by now, in 2011 certain ignoramuses at the IRS flagged groups with "Tea Party" or "patriot" in their names for closer scrutiny when they applied for tax-exempt status.

The IRS has, of course, apologized. And at today's press conference, the President said that, if true, the IRS's actions were "outrageous and there's no place for it." Those responsible will "be held fully accountable."

Thanks goodness! A breath of fresh air!

Now some of you with lower IQs might be thinking things like "Hey Manny, isn't it against the law for non-profits to have some types of political agenda? And isn't there a pretty good chance that an organization with "Tea Party" or "patriot" in its name has a political agenda? Doesn't it make sense to take a closer look at outfits like that, just in case?"

For those types, who are trapped in a "reality-based" world, let me explain:

Haven't you noticed how much our President has done for you people? Well-off Americans have gained a full 5.6 trillion dollars since the start of the Obama recovery! $5.6 trillion is one hell of a lot of money, don't you agree?!

And those who aren't rich have only lost 600 billion. You little people should be damned grateful!

What's Obama's secret? His secret is that he's not trapped by "reality". He knows that by being obsequious to the fringe right, while bashing people who insist on Democratic values, he can get the Republicans to do his bidding. As he has.

So instead of whining, please join me in thanking the President for his thoughtful actions?

Huzzah!

Regards,

Third-Way Manny

These flagged groups stink to high heaven and the IRS was doing the correct thing. We all know they are political groups hiding behind the tax exempt status. Obama is good with getting the IRS off the backs of the lying tax dodgers? I can't help but wonder how'd it be if they were Liberal groups trying this instead?

He would explain how no one is above the law, especially poor liberals. He would then seek out the targetee and place him in some cabinet position.

All investigations of who is behind the Tea Party and which non-profit groups who are illegally funding them, will now end because democrats must show Republicans how fair-minded we are. And in return Republicans will praise this President for his actions, they will stop attacking him, they will begin to work with him on important issues etc. etc. Well, that is the magical thinking version of this sad story.

Pleasing Republicans is a top priority for Democratic Leaders. We always worry about what they might think of us if we were to do the right thing. And so we must keep showing them how much we are willing to do for them, so in the end, they will like us!

Tea Party groups also insisted they had the right to either pay no taxes at all (because they were seceding or some such crap) or they claimed the right to subtract from their taxes the amount which they figured would go to "Socialist Welfare." In both cases they were actively conspiring to defraud the federal government. Why shouldn't they be investigated by the IRS?

Manny, I know you were making a completely different point, but I can't help providing this clarification.

It is not unlawful to have a tax-exempt organization with a political agenda.

Section 527 of the Internal Revenue code is dedicated to tax-exempt political organizations. They exist (on all sides of the political spectrum) and they are lawful.

Section 527 allows tax exemption for "issue advocacy" organizations as long as they do not engage in partisan activities (advocating for or against the election of a candidate). I'm sure many of the local Tea Party organizations fail this test- and they are required to register with and report to the IRS. I don't know who has responsibility to monitor compliance and prosecute non-compliance...

The Republicans get almost no help with their agenda from Big Media, Cable "News", Hate Radio, and all of those magazines like Reason, Spectator, Standard, US Snooze, and so on. If it weren't for the president being the only adult in the room and doing whatever they ask, many times even before they ask it, the damn country would be a Marxist paradise.

Thank you Mr. President. I am 100% certain that your panderi-, er, I mean level-headedness and outreach to the people who are going to impeach you will bring millions to the polls next year.

Government was always meant to harass the left and the left only. If this is allowed to continue the next thing you know we'll be asking the right to play by the same rules as everyone else. What then?!! Will we start asking the rich to pay taxes like ordinary 9 to 5 nickel & dime American's? Will they go after violent right wing extremists before they have a chance to kill? My God man think of the consequences! Is this what you want for America?

I'm sorry but he's blowing it big time. He literally has no clue as to how to handle "scandals" like this and I guarantee you he won't do a damn thing accept for say we will investigate and then let the whole mess fester. He's got a faux scandal, an issue of plain stupidity(IRS), and a genuine screw up that is rightfully condemned on both sides(AP report) and he hasn't the slightest clue as to how to handle this. His presidency is on the line and he doesn't have what it takes to fight media spin on these things. He sees it as silliness but in reality it matters. I normally support him but he's screwing up this time and he has nobody to blame but himself. At least Bill new how to fight these people. Barack on the other hand enjoys getting smacked around by these people. If he doesn't get it together soon his presidency is a done deal.

More scrutiny should be given to anti-tax groups seeking to be tax exempt. Nothing was even done there was just more scrutiny. The IRS did their due diligence.

94. You're acting as though you have proof of something. You have nothing

I read the article you linked in the other thread. It says that the same office in the IRS that was giving extra scrutiny to Tea Party groups also screwed up by sending ProPublica a list of applicants who had not yet been approved. This list included Rove's Crossroads GPS. END OF STORY.

You go on to surmise that this is retaliation on Rove's part. And you may be right--this is just the sort of thing he'd love to be involved in. But based on the article you linked to, no responsible adult could make a solid conclusion, or any conclusion, that Rove is behind this. Of course, the worst part is that you're already casting dark accusations against any who don't immediately agree with your proof-free hypothesis ("...and look who's playing along...&quot .

In what state did you pass the bar?

That was no screw-up. That was a deliberate leak that could be explained as a mistake.

What state am I barred in? Why? You need a lawyer in PA?

106. OK, they either screwed up or did it on purpose, immaterial to both your point & mine

Either way, I could see Karl Rove wanting to retaliate--it's very much in his character. My problem with your assertion is that you're acting as though you've proven this is all about Karl Rove retaliating. You haven't come close to proving it. You have let us know that the same IRS office in Cincinnati that let ProPublica know about CGPS also engaged in extra scrutiny of 'bagger groups. The rest is speculation on your part. Speculation is fine. Damning people for not immediately buying into your speculation is not fine.

He plays the D.C. Game well but does not call out the corruption in our system. He has helped to erode our rights and done nothing to the Wall Street powerbrokers. I could go on. He has thrown us a few bones and has been much better than Rmoney, but still plays the game as the Washington Generals Head Coach. COMPLETE CAMPAIGN FINANXE REFORM IS THE ONLY WAY TO GET OUT REPRESENTATIVE DEMOCRACY BACK! The only ones represented now are the rich and the corporations. Very undemocratic!!!

REASON FOR ALERT:

This post is disruptive, hurtful, rude, insensitive, over-the-top, or otherwise inappropriate. (See Community Standards.)

ALERTER'S COMMENTS:

Yet another personal attack, which is all this person has ever posted in this incarnation or his previous ones which were banned for--you guessed it--posting constant personal attacks.

You served on a randomly-selected Jury of DU members which reviewed this post. The review was completed at Tue May 14, 2013, 01:37 PM, and the Jury voted 3-3 to LEAVE IT.

Juror #1 voted to HIDE IT and said: So, where's the "personal attack" that the poster refers to in the OP? Manny is questioning the government's tactics.
Juror #2 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: I don't know who this is suppose to be. And one was just left that was much more rude to another long time DUer. So, meh.
Juror #3 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: Post is apropos considering the OP! Leave it.
Juror #4 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: Pathetic post, but not hide-worthy.
Juror #5 voted to HIDE IT and said: How has this person remained here so long?

Thank you very much for participating in our Jury system, and we hope you will be able to participate again in the future.

114. TW Manny, now you've gone too far. The 5.6 trillion is no big deal, it has to be divided up among
Tue May 14, 2013, 08:35 PM
May 2013

the 1% so it comes out to to a paltry 5.6 million each. Chump change. Donald Trump's family cant buy personalities for that. And as far as the paupers losing 600 billion, really, REALLY! when you divide it out it's really only about $2,000 per pauper or about $8,000 per family. Good grief TW Manny. That's nothing. It could be worst. If Mittens were president who knows the paupers would probably have lost $2, 200 each. And if a meteor had strucken the earth, wow then, well just wow. Dog love the President.
