As we all know by now, in 2011 certain ignoramuses at the IRS flagged groups with "Tea Party" or "patriot" in their names for closer scrutiny when they applied for tax-exempt status.
The IRS has, of course, apologized. And at today's press conference, the President said that, if true, the IRS's actions were "outrageous and there's no place for it." Those responsible will "be held fully accountable."
Thanks goodness! A breath of fresh air!
Now some of you with lower IQs might be thinking things like "Hey Manny, isn't it against the law for non-profits to have some types of political agenda? And isn't there a pretty good chance that an organization with "Tea Party" or "patriot" in its name has a political agenda? Doesn't it make sense to take a closer look at outfits like that, just in case?"
For those types, who are trapped in a "reality-based" world, let me explain:
Haven't you noticed how much our President has done for you people? Well-off Americans have gained a full 5.6 trillion dollars since the start of the Obama recovery! $5.6 trillion is one hell of a lot of money, don't you agree?!
And those who aren't rich have only lost 600 billion. You little people should be damned grateful!
What's Obama's secret? His secret is that he's not trapped by "reality". He knows that by being obsequious to the fringe right, while bashing people who insist on Democratic values, he can get the Republicans to do his bidding. As he has.
So instead of whining, please join me in thanking the President for his thoughtful actions?
Huzzah!

(25,592 posts)These flagged groups stink to high heaven and the IRS was doing the correct thing. We all know they are political groups hiding behind the tax exempt status. Obama is good with getting the IRS off the backs of the lying tax dodgers? I can't help but wonder how'd it be if they were Liberal groups trying this instead?

(62,325 posts)He would explain how no one is above the law, especially poor liberals. He would then seek out the targetee and place him in some cabinet position.
All investigations of who is behind the Tea Party and which non-profit groups who are illegally funding them, will now end because democrats must show Republicans how fair-minded we are. And in return Republicans will praise this President for his actions, they will stop attacking him, they will begin to work with him on important issues etc. etc. Well, that is the magical thinking version of this sad story.
Pleasing Republicans is a top priority for Democratic Leaders. We always worry about what they might think of us if we were to do the right thing. And so we must keep showing them how much we are willing to do for them, so in the end, they will like us!

(8,821 posts)Tea Party groups also insisted they had the right to either pay no taxes at all (because they were seceding or some such crap) or they claimed the right to subtract from their taxes the amount which they figured would go to "Socialist Welfare." In both cases they were actively conspiring to defraud the federal government. Why shouldn't they be investigated by the IRS?

Then after he leaves office, Obama and Sarah Palin will announce their secret love affair, which goes back to when she helped Obama defeat McCain.
After winning the 2008 election, Obama with Palin's help, created the Tea Party which pretends to hate him, but who in fact secretly funds all of his corporatist desires.

SlipperySlope
(2,751 posts)Manny, I know you were making a completely different point, but I can't help providing this clarification.
It is not unlawful to have a tax-exempt organization with a political agenda.
Section 527 of the Internal Revenue code is dedicated to tax-exempt political organizations. They exist (on all sides of the political spectrum) and they are lawful.
hay rick
(7,603 posts)Section 527 allows tax exemption for "issue advocacy" organizations as long as they do not engage in partisan activities (advocating for or against the election of a candidate). I'm sure many of the local Tea Party organizations fail this test- and they are required to register with and report to the IRS. I don't know who has responsibility to monitor compliance and prosecute non-compliance...

(118 posts)I'm sorry but he's blowing it big time. He literally has no clue as to how to handle "scandals" like this and I guarantee you he won't do a damn thing accept for say we will investigate and then let the whole mess fester. He's got a faux scandal, an issue of plain stupidity(IRS), and a genuine screw up that is rightfully condemned on both sides(AP report) and he hasn't the slightest clue as to how to handle this. His presidency is on the line and he doesn't have what it takes to fight media spin on these things. He sees it as silliness but in reality it matters. I normally support him but he's screwing up this time and he has nobody to blame but himself. At least Bill new how to fight these people. Barack on the other hand enjoys getting smacked around by these people. If he doesn't get it together soon his presidency is a done deal.

(12,530 posts)I read the article you linked in the other thread. It says that the same office in the IRS that was giving extra scrutiny to Tea Party groups also screwed up by sending ProPublica a list of applicants who had not yet been approved. This list included Rove's Crossroads GPS. END OF STORY.
You go on to surmise that this is retaliation on Rove's part. And you may be right--this is just the sort of thing he'd love to be involved in. But based on the article you linked to, no responsible adult could make a solid conclusion, or any conclusion, that Rove is behind this. Of course, the worst part is that you're already casting dark accusations against any who don't immediately agree with your proof-free hypothesis ("...and look who's playing along..." .
In what state did you pass the bar?

That was no screw-up. That was a deliberate leak that could be explained as a mistake.
What state am I barred in? Why? You need a lawyer in PA?
DisgustipatedinCA
(12,530 posts)Either way, I could see Karl Rove wanting to retaliate--it's very much in his character. My problem with your assertion is that you're acting as though you've proven this is all about Karl Rove retaliating. You haven't come close to proving it. You have let us know that the same IRS office in Cincinnati that let ProPublica know about CGPS also engaged in extra scrutiny of 'bagger groups. The rest is speculation on your part. Speculation is fine. Damning people for not immediately buying into your speculation is not fine.
