Former Vice President Dick Cheney weighed in on Benghazi last night, saying the Sept. 11, 2012 attack on a U.S. diplomatic mission in Libya was one of the worst incidences he could recall.
President Obama on Monday defended the actions he and the rest of the Executive Branch took in the days and weeks after the assault that took the lives of four Americans, directly questioning those who claim that he orchestrated a cover-up.
But on Fox News last night, Cheney attacked Obamas response, claiming (without evidence) that the Obama administration lied about Benghazi:
CHENEY: I watched the Benghazi thing with great interest, Sean [Hannity]. I think its one of the worst incidences, frankly, that I can recall in my career. It put the whole capability claiming the terrorist problem solved once we got Bin Laden, that Al Qaeda was over with. If they told the truth about Benghazi, that it was a terrorist attack by an al-Qaeda-affiliated group, it would destroy the confidence that was the basis of his campaign for re-election.
They lied. They claimed it was because of a demonstration video, that they wouldnt have to admit it was really all about their incompetence. They ignored repeated warnings from the CIA about the threat. They ignored messages from their own people on the ground that they need more security. They reduced what was already there.
Cheneys choice of words is interesting, given the numerous security lapses and misleading narratives that took place during his multiple periods in power in Washington. One would think that the former vice president would regard the 9/11 attacks as the worst incident that he could recall. Or perhaps the run-up to the invasion of Iraq, in which he and other members of the administration repeatedly misled the American people about Iraqs WMDs and the wars difficulty and costs. Or the Abu Gharib prison scandal, in which Iraqis were tortured under the watchful eyes of American soldiers and prompted more and greater attacks on U.S. forces. Or perhaps the thirteen attacks on U.S. diplomatic compounds that occurred during the Bush administrations two terms, in which nearly a dozen Americans died.

Anyone else find it funny how the war millionaire behind "deficits don't matter" and who shot his hunting buddy in the face is trashing Obama over Benghazi?

The irony here is of course they have the gun pointing backward! And I will say this years in advance; this will comeback to haunt them in the 2014 and 2016 elections and beyond. These morons are incapable of shame and that guarantees us many victories down the road.

Why Were Republicans SILENT When REAGAN'S BENGHAZI KILLED 241 American Servicemen?
Benghazi wasnt the scandal that the conservative right tried to make it out to be. Unfortunately, the Democratic president didnt engage in a big cover-up, and the Republicans trying to score political points by shouting Benghazi, Benghazi! are rapidly becoming irrelevant. In the fact of that, it should be pointed out that this amount of supposed outrage is completely hypocritical. One way to illustrate this is using the Beirut Barracks Bombing of 1983, which occurred during, and was the fault of, the Reagan administration. The following (above) image, which has been shared quite a bit recently, is referring to it:
The image isnt entirely correct. Only 220 United States Marines were killed. The remaining casualties consisted of 18 killed sailors and three soldiers, for a total of 241 servicemen. Yet other than that small error, what the image claims is true it was President Reagans fault that incident occurred. In fact, the official investigation and subsequent Department of Defense report found chain-of-command errors and placed fault on the Reagan administration, as well. The Marines had been stationed there as part of an international peacekeeping venture:

All the wars he started are already covered.
Iran-Contra, Beirut, all the abominations of the Reagan Junta we already covered.
But how about the My Lai Massacre? Oh, and you gotta see this...The Battle Hymn of Lt. Calley, which is an actual song...
BATTLE HYMN OF LT. CALLEY
(Julian Wilson and James M. Smith)
Recitation 1 (background music: verse of Battle Hymn of the Republic)
Once upon a time there was a little boy who wanted to grow up to
be a soldier and serve his country in whatever way he could. He would
parade around the house with a saucepan on his head for a helmet, a
wooden sword in one hand and the American flag in the other. As he
grew up, he put away the things of a child, but he never let go of
the flag.
Sung: (same tune)
My name is William Calley, I'm a soldier of this land
I've tried to do my duty and to gain the upper hand,
But they've made me out a villain, they have stamped me with a brand
As we go marching on.
I'm just another soldier from the shores of U.S.A,
Forgotten on a battlefield ten thousand miles away
While life goes on as usual from New York to Santa Fe
As we go marching on.
I've seen my buddies ambushed on the left and on the right,
And their youthful bodies riddled by the bullets of the night
Where all the rules are broken and the only law is might
As we go marching on.
While we're fighting in the jungles, they were marching in the street,
While we're dying in the rice fields they were helping our defeat
While we're facing V.C. bullets they were sounding a retreat
As we go marching on.
With our sweat we took the bunkers, with our tears we took the plain,
With our blood we took the mountain and they gave it back again
Still all of us are soldiers we're too busy to complain
As we go marching on.
Recitation 2 (background music: chorus of Battle Hymn of the Republic)
When I reach my final campground in that land beyond the sun, and
the Great Commander asks me, "Did you fight or did you run?" I'll
stand both straight and tall, stripped of medals, rank and gun, and
this is what I'll say:
"Sir, I followed all my orders and I did the best I could; it's
hard to judge the enemy and hard to tell the good, yet there's not
a man among us would not have understood. We took the jungle village
exactly like they said, we responded to their rifle fire with
everything we had. And when the smoke had cleared away a hundred
souls lay dead. Sir, the soldier that's alive is the only one can
fight, there's no other way to wage a war when the only one in sight
that you're sure is not a V.C. is your buddy on your right. When all
the wars are over and the battle's finally won, count me only as a
soldier who never left his gun with the right to serve my country
as the only prize I've won.
Sung:
Glory, glory Hallelujah
Glory, glory Hallelujah
His truth goes marching on

I don't think I've ever met anyone in real life as pathologically dishonest and who has no qualms about doing that on national TV or in a hearing.
Outside his own family, friends (except for the one he shot?), and political affiliation, he has no use for any other human beings.

(12,645 posts)I highly doubt Benghazi even gets close to that level.
Two weeks before it happened, I was waiting at a MAC terminal in Dover and got hit up for dinner and $20 by a personable red-headed Navy corpsman assigned to that battalion trying to get back after leave (he didn't have the $10 it would have cost him to leave CONUS on a comfortable overseas hop and I have a soft spot in my heart for gingers).
He called me when he got there three days before the bombing, and he was talking about getting over to the left coast for Christmas (his grandparents lived in NorCal) and maybe think about California when it came to his upcoming duty rotation so we could maybe get together ... but I never heard from him again.
Saw his name listed in the Navy Times later that month, though...he never made it to visit his grandparents for Christmas that year as he was planning. Forever 25 years old.
So, you were White House Chief of Staff during the Nixon years - during Vietnam and the cover-ups in Cambodia. You were a member of Congress between 1978 - 1989, when you took over as SecDef for Bush 41. Lots of stuff happened during those years. Lots of really bad incidents, cover-ups and other mis-conduct by people in the executive branch. Incidents with national implications, that changed the course of history for the worse.
Not to mention all those "little" incidents that happened under your watch - terrorist attacks, outing of CIA assets that crippled National Security, a slew of embassy bombings, torture "justification", the patriot Act and other Constitutionally suspect activities -
So, Benghazi is really the "Worse Incident you can recall in your career". With no respect towards you at all, "sir", I will say to your face - You're a fu**ing psychopathic liar.
Or do you just have Alzheimer's and can't remember anything but the "happy stuff" prior to your last cardiac overhaul.

(403 posts)for me would be one of the most horrific "incidences" imaginable.
His utterances prove two things, this was not a friend he shot, and it was not an accident. OK, maybe it proves three things, every comment above is right on the mark. Senile? Maybe...thousands and thousands dead, buildings around the world blown to bits on his watch, and several wars that he profited from. Yet, for him, this is the biggest deal to ever come down the pike?
His new heart hasn't helped him gain compassion. It has only kept him alive longer than the real people he seems to have such great hate for. I could go on and on, but thank you all for going on and on so I don't have to.
I have no other suggestion for freeing ourselves as a country from the people of this ilk and those deceived enough to follow them, than to require truth from "news outlets" such as Fox, NBC, CNN, et. al. (Clearly Lying Channel also cones to mind, but you know). It could happen, but complaints to these shills are nearly impossible at best and always ignored.

Rumsfeld:
Was it a slip of the tongue? Was it an error? Or was it the truth, finally being dropped on the public more than three years after the tragedy of the terrorist attacks that killed nearly 3,000?
I think all of us have a sense if we imagine the kind of world we would face if the people who bombed the mess hall in Mosul, or the people who did the bombing in Spain, or the people who attacked the United States in New York, shot down the plane over Pennsylvania and attacked the Pentagon, the people who cut off peoples heads on television to intimidate, to frighten indeed the word terrorized is just that. Its purpose is to terrorize, to alter behavior, to make people be something other than that which they want to be.
Several residents in and around Shanksville, Pa., describing the crash as they saw it, claim to have seen a second plane an unmarked military-style jet.

Perhaps we should have a new investigation into this little event.
