Hospital laying off employees; blaming Obamacare

The lack of expansion of Medicaid is the responsibility of the Republican dominated legislature in the state capital. But let's blame Obamacare??

Liberty Hospital said the 2014 Affordable Care Act would reduce payments to the hospital from Medicare, and the hospital would experience reduced payments because of lack of expansion to the Medicaid program.

"The hospital needed to be prepared for that as opposed to waiting until that actually goes into effect," hospital spokeswoman Julie Simpson said. "Our CEO, our board of directors and our management team decided to take a look at how to be prepared for those cuts that will take place no matter what we do."

Liberty Hospital is a 250-bed regional medical center serving Clay and Platte counties as well as the northwest Missouri corridor.

The hospital currently has more than 1,700 employees and 300 physicians. The public hospital opened in 1974.

1. Bullshit.

However, hospitals have been cutting staff by attrition ever since the ACA was passed because their stupid bean counters are frightened by all the negative propaganda from the GOP.

The big scandal out there is how many new grads in nursing, who began their educations being told about the nursing shortage, now find there are no jobs, anywhere.

Staffing was already at unsafe levels when I left nearly a decade ago. I can't imagine what nurses in the trenches are dealing with today.

2. My nightmares are all about

doing med-surg nursing again. I don't think I could trust management, nurse supervisors, etc to do the right thing when it comes to staffing and training.

And then if OT ever became optional or replaced with Comp Time, I fear it could be worse.
