Service Dog Arrives At College Graduation In Cap And Gown (X-Post)

CROSSPOST FROM GOOD NEWS GROUP: http://www.democraticunderground.com/1267633

A young woman and her service dog caused quite a stir over the weekend when they both showed up to her college graduation ceremony dressed in matching caps and gowns.

"This is my service dog, Hero, after we graduated with our Master's degrees at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign," she wrote in a caption accompanying this Imgur photo.

"Hero knows over forty commands to assist me," she added on Reddit on Monday, adding that the dog had been quite the "celebrity" at the graduation ceremony. "He loves to retrieve objects for my like envelopes, pens, my crutches, etc. He also turns off the lights, opens doors, and he pulls me in my wheelchair up ramps! I couldn't have gone to college without him."

..... I do some landscape work @ the kennel he is out of and it is
real funny to see 6 big male stud labs watching me work with big
stupid grins on their faces.

Yesterday my lab, flubie, got tired of fetching the stick out of a pond
and would drop it @ my feet and then would grab it and run into the
water with the hopes I would follow him into the drink. Dogs are much
smarter then we think.

that is now "The State Farm Center". $2 million a year for 30 years, for the naming rights. They're planning on a $165 million remodel, it was built in 1963, my dad and grandfather worked on it. The saucer on the prairie.

Figures this would be from Champaign-Urbana...one of my favorite places.
Beautiful dog, lovely human!
Naturally, being somewhat goofy, I wondered who did the tailoring on Hero's robe.

Of the first campuses to become accessible. Wheelchairs on campus were a common sight in the 70's.

then because I had a strong suspicion that I knew who posted this, I checked at the top. I am so not surprised that you would post something so heartwarming.

I recently broke my arm and luckily have short term disability but it's taking forever. I actually contemplated talking to you about asking the community for help but my landlord/longterm friend stepped in. He's just amazing. It's going to take me the rest of the year to pay him back and the other various bills that a fully insured person ends up paying for medical care (I'm going to guess it will be about $10,000) but I feel nothing but gratitude, both for the currently free roof over my head and the extra monetary help he's provided.

He's good people. You are good people. I really believe we good people outnumber the not good people.

I don't know how I'd have handled that classroom situation. I'd be over scritchin' Hero's ears, bringing dog treats, and prol'ly playing fetch with the text.

Hero has me thinking. Maybe I'd rather be teaching a class of dogs.

Hero looks like a more serious student than most of the ones I have.

One of my neighbors with severe rheumatoid arthritis was accompanied by her service dog as she got her PhD. But her dog only had a cap...no gown.
