Anybody remember Nixon's "Enemies List"?

"Nixon’s Enemies List is the informal name of what started as a list of President of the United States Richard Nixon’s major political opponents compiled by Charles Colson, written by George T. Bell (assistant to Colson, special counsel to the White House), and sent in memorandum form to John Dean on September 9, 1971. The list was part of a campaign officially known as “Opponents List” and “Political Enemies Project.” The list became public knowledge when Dean mentioned during hearings with the Senate Watergate Committee that a list existed containing those whom the president did not like. Journalist Daniel Schorr, who happened to be on the list, managed to obtain copies of it later that day.

The official purpose, as described by the White House Counsel's Office, was to "screw" Nixon's political enemies, by means of tax audits from the Internal Revenue Service, and by manipulating "grant availability, federal contracts, litigation, prosecution, etc."[3] In a memorandum from John Dean to Lawrence Higby (August 16, 1971), Dean explained the purpose of the list:

“ This memorandum addresses the matter of how we can maximize the fact of our incumbency in dealing with persons known to be active in their opposition to our Administration; stated a bit more bluntly—how we can use the available federal machinery to screw our political enemies.

John Conyers and Paul Newman made the cut.
See the list at the above link.

He had guests who also made the cut.

He was...very cynical of government after that, and three back to back audits.

When Iran Contra blew up...he said, presciently, while this should be prosecuted, it won't. Dems will not go after another republican in my lifetime. I am paraphrasing. I was a young, somewhat still, idealistic kid.

Iran contra made me a cynic

Oh and for the kids...this was in the 1980s...you are asking them to remember 1971? Ancient history my friend

Those in power want to remain in power, above all else.
They'll take potshots at one another, but never to the point of actually forcing an 'opponent' out of power.

It behooves them to stick together.

Hey...It's a posh job.
Lots of benefits that we'll never see.

We are seeing some duzy's at the local level. It is an ethos...it stopped being about service and became about power and little and big fiefdoms. I cover local politics...and while we have a few from both parties who get into it for the right reasons, very few actually remain about that.

We have a local one, he s an open...even transparent government Advocate. He can be, I won't mince words, an asshole. He is a hard core libertarian...but he believes in open government above else. I disagree with him on 90% of politics, but he is doing it for the right reasons...I can admire him for that. He will never get above a couple boards...open government...you nuts???

While I disagree with him politically, we need more like him...at much higher levels of government

"It was the poorest lemon ranch in California. My dad sold it before they found oil on it". What a master of deceit and manipulation. Hard to tell whether Nixon or Bu$h 43 was worse.

The "official" White House lie about investigating Daniel Schorr was that they were "considering offering him a sensitive job."

Another important, though not so well-known fact is that the CREEP broke into Dan Rather's home late one night, when he was upstairs asleep. He wrote about it in one of his first books.
