Wonderful!
"A story on NPR reports that the TrackingPoint rifle went on sale today, and can enable a 'novice' to hit a target 500 yards away on the first try. The rifle's scope features a sophisticated color graphics display (video). The shooter locks a laser on the target by pushing a small button by the trigger... But here's where it's different: You pull the trigger but the gun decides when to shoot. It fires only when the weapon has been pointed in exactly the right place, taking into account dozens of variables, including wind, shake and distance to the target. The rifle has a built-in laser range finder, a ballistics computer and a Wi-Fi transmitter to stream live video and audio to a nearby iPad. Every shot is recorded so it can be replayed, or posted to YouTube or Facebook.

The casualty rates were exceedingly high.

(3,731 posts)like your average gun owner can afford this at $22,000 a pop.
This will be a rich persons firearm, not a run of the mill gun owner.

(68,644 posts)And I doubt that many whacko sociopaths are going to cough up the cash, assuming that they're eligible to own one.
It's a smart gun, but not that smart.
A smart gun would distinguish innocent victims from predators, and a smarter gun would fire at the owner if he/she's a bad person!

(18,318 posts)...that may not be truly "arms," even using the most fluid definitions of controller/banners.
A good sniper with an ordinary Remington 700 hunting rifle with a good scope can hit a target out to 700 yards.

You'd be better off using a .22 rifle or a .410 shotgun for rabbit hunting.

(3,731 posts)it'll be more of a rich persons system or a novelty item.
A sniper can shoot just as well with a Remington 700 with a good scope.

(12,778 posts)That's why I keep a shotgun for home defense. I figure that if someone keeps coming after hearing the very distinctive "click", they probably need to be shot.

(50,447 posts)This sounds like a SWAT sniper's dream rifle: one that will hit the bad guy they're shooting at in high wind, and holds an evidence trail to use in court. Your average scumbag isn't going to buy one because the price is too high, and your rich guy isn't going to buy one because rich guys get hand-carved exotic-wood stocks and gold inlays. But police departments will.
