The victim is 72 years old, said he was a doctor (dentist, we think), very handsome and loved to play golf. He did have a drink problem and had been in rehab numerous times. During the past year he has received two DUIs that we know of, and his life really started to fall apart. I'm saddened by this, always a smile and hello from him which I shall miss. Hope he is in a better place..He did use a gun, of course..

(83 posts)An old school buddy of mine Committed suicide a few months ago. I just found out about it. Left behind a son and daughter. I just cannot understand it. I will never be able to get my head around it. That is the second one of my old school friends to commit suicide.

(9,186 posts)the suicidal person does not see that there is a "solution".
I've been in the ER several times over the years helping medical staff with suicide-attempt victims. Social workers and what writing I've seen show that the suicidal person sees suicide as the only solution to their problem.
I even got a thank you letter from one victim. She helped me understand somewhat what was going through her mind as she decided to end her life... She actually said she thought this was the only way out for her.
They aren't cowards (as some of my coworkers assert) and they are not taking the "easy way out." it truly is a difficult thing to try to understand.
It takes a lot to end your life, I struggle regularly trying to better understand
