Colorado woman fatally shot in head with her own assault rifle

A Colorado woman is thought to have accidentally killed herself on Thursday as she tried to show off her recently-purchased assault rifle to friends.

Federal Heights Police Department spokesperson Lt. Gary Toldness told The Denver Post that 22-year-old Anastasia Adair was drinking beer with her 40-year-old tattoo artist husband, Dana “Shane” Adair, and three other people when the incident happened in their garage where their Harley Davidson motorcycles were parked.

Toldness said that Anastasia Adair went into her home to get the rifle and then returned to the garage, but slipped or stumbled while handing it to her husband. The weapon went off, striking her in her head. Dana Adair reportedly caught his wife before she could hit the ground.

According to KMGH-TV, the gun fired a second time as Anastasia Adair fell, but no one was hit. She was later pronounced dead at Denver Health Medical Center. “At this point in time, we are looking at this as an accidental shooting,” Toldness explained to the Post.

“It’s not a good idea to be handling weapons while you’re intoxicated,” he pointed out. “It’s always a bad mix.”
