General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsHow many "Star" DUers currently have you on their ignore list?
I happened to be browsing through my various account settings and clicked My Profile, clicked the transparency tab, and then clicked the "Show me my Transparency page" link.
I was kind of amazed at the number of Star members who have me on full ignore. I realize that my manners on this board are generally lacking, so it makes sense that some people have decided to tune me out.
What's typical? How many do you have ignoring you?
Another question: can you tell when someone is ignoring you? Does the DU software give you any clues that you are about to respond to someone who will be incapable of seeing your response?
treestar
(82,383 posts)I prefer to think of them as people with heads firmly in sand.
I don't think you can tell. Unless there was someone who responded to you and suddenly quits, or tells you.

(38,437 posts)57 who simply ignore my posts and 59 have me under full block. The full block is funny -- I have PM'd four people in all my years at DU. I'm not a real threat to do any PM stalking.
My ignore list grows by about 2 or 3 per week. I fear that all the star members will be ignoring me by the end of the year. I'll be like a ghost.

There is currently no way to tell if someone has you on ignore, including sending them PM's. I even asked Skinner about this, since on DU2, you were told when you tried to PM someone who had you on ignore. He agreed that this is a feature they will probably implement someday.
I hope so.

Occasionally pissy, but overall, even when a lot of people get hot about something and start really laying into each other, it's still pretty mild in comparison to what I'm used to.

I seem to recall that if you reply to someone who is ignoring you, it will show up in "My Posts" as 'This user has you on ignore' or something to that effect. It's been at least 8 months since I saw that message, so I guess I don't run into them often!

As for the others, certainly there are always those who are going to disagree with you, find you "boring" or whatever causes folks to decide they need to ignore you... I think it best not to take that too personally.
As for why there might be more blocking mail rather than fully ignoring, I think some will block mail , if they want to "keep and eye" on a handful of posters for whatever reason... It gives one a convenient list to go back to, if you were so inclined, I suppose and I guess it is even possible some use it (if they assume they won't be likely to miss any dumail) as we once did the "buddy list".

The night that I left DU in 11-2010 I had dozens of people on Ignore, and part of my leave-taking was to clean out all my files. I have no idea who had me on Ignore in return. Upon my return two years later, it appears that some of them had been served the granite pizza and reincarnated. Life is strange -- or at least the DU version of it is.
Since returning last fall I have questioned that decision (to return) many times, but have put no one on Ignore. If it gets that bad I'll just leave again, quietly, and afaik no one will either notice or give a damn.
Still here though.

(101,294 posts)Presumably, if you did as little as make a spelling mistake, you went on their list. I really wanted to know what DU actually looked like for someone ignoring so much of it. GD pages with about 10 threads on the first page, and only a couple of visible replies in them, I guess.
I would be surprised if there's any DUer with over 1,000 posts that doesn't have someone ignoring them. You are doing well with just 2.
dlwickham
(3,316 posts)I vaguely remember a female poster who just had issues with everyone
When I was a mod, we all dreaded dealing with her alerts
muriel_volestrangler
(101,294 posts)I'm not even sure if I ever knew. As a mod, you could see the list of people a member was ignoring (to check that "I'm putting you on ignore" wasn't just used as a way to criticise someone without it being true, and to see if that was why the target of an insult hadn't alerted on it, because they hadn't seen it), and occasionally you'd see this huge list. I can't remember if this person was associated with many alerts or not.
Rex
(65,616 posts)That is if they were honest and blocked me.
defacto7
(13,485 posts)The number could change if people do what I do.
I only have 3 maybe 4 people on a permanent ignore list. But I have as high as 30 or so from time to time on a non permanent basis. When posts come up that certain people make impossible to traverse or make general mayhem, I put them on ignore for a week or two. I clear the list every once in a while because not every poster is the same forever or on every subject. It's like a jubilee for ignore every couple of weeks except the couple that I keep there, but even then I take them off on occasion but end up back on usually.
I think this works for me the best because people sometimes change and they also may have good comments on different subject matter.
Buzz Clik
(38,437 posts)I have something similar that I do.
When someone starts pounding on my with all sorts of insults, I go to the ignore button and keep them there for a day or two. If the person continues to follow me around and harangue me, it's permanent ignore.
Amazingly, it hasn't stopped the tide of 2 or 3 ignorers per week.
HereSince1628
(36,063 posts)So ending up my ignore list isn't about other posters as much as it is about my viewing interests.
For example, I'm not interested in minute by minute progress of So California brush fires. I recognize these posts are of interest and have importance to other people. But they aren't of general interest to me.
Similarly, I don't need to be kept abreast of every accidental/alcohol impaired shooting. I recognize these posts may be of interest and importance to others who are keeping score. But, they aren't of general interest to me.

(39,961 posts)you would come onto a message board and then ignore people. Even if you disagree with them, isn't that what you are here to do, is discuss things? I would just assume it is 73 people that can't handle having a discussion with people that they disagree with. Having a strong opinion doesn't mean being blind to the other side of the argument.

Someone who does not have anyone ignoring them should ask it. Someone willing to take a little heat for it. That kind of thread can create a lot of hard feelings. Someone who might get a post hidden, but the end result could be fun.

p.s. I think it is not a good idea to put folks on ignore. If you can't see what 'everyone' is posting then there's too big of a chance of posting too many dupes.
And I also want to see what 'everyone' is saying.
I think it's a shame that so many folks have me on ignore, because quite often I post articles that I do not see other folks ever post - so my ignorers are missing out on news at times

(65,269 posts)was rather surprised to find that 3 star members are ignoring me and blocking private messages from me. Surprised because I don't ever get into it with people here on DU, so I can't even imagine what I did to annoy people enough to make them want to disappear me altogether.
I guess I must have posted a comment at some point on a topic that they are particularly uptight about or something. For some reason I am reminded of a particularly angry regular who finally abandoned DU in a huff when we were still DU2. She was an animal rights activist, and I am quite passionate about the well-being of animals, so I had noticed her posts on relevant threads. I thought she was rather intemperate sometimes, but I never argued with her about things, nor had we ever participated in the same discussion thread. I just noticed that her posts were all about animal rights.
She once mentioned in passing on some thread that she was unable to search because she had no star, so I donated to give her a star. Sometimes I do that when someone mentions not having a star. (I am not well off, but I have been much worse off in the past and people have helped me, so I am a great believer in paying it forward whenever I can.)
I said she could search if she wanted to now, and she lit into me like you wouldn't believe in a strikingly unpleasant PM. I didn't know her, had never had any interaction with her at all, but she was really, really nasty about my having given her a star.
I do find myself puzzled about the 3 people blocking me, though, and wondering what I might have done to annoy them seriously enough for them to want to block me and refuse any PMs from me--not that I send PMs, though, unless I am responding to a PM that someone else has sent to me. Seriously--[i/]I have never sent a PM except in response to one sent to me, so it's not as though they had to protect themselves from a barrage of unwanted PMs by blocking me from sending any to them!
Very strange.
On Edit: I don't have anyone at all on ignore--and never have used that function at all.

(24,461 posts)This is a progressive board, not a "Praise Plutocrats" board. All four support the following pro-Republican economic tenets (specifically #7, #8 and #9), which is why they're in the Red-X Toilet:
1. The prime function of a business or corporation is to care for the shareholder's needs only, by which I mostly mean "major".
2. Business functions best as a "top down" model; hypothetically speaking, of course.
3. You CAN "feed the birds by giving the horse more oats".
4. That this country's economic problems have more to do with "high taxes", "high wages" and "strangling regulations" than wealth inequality and top-heavy greed.
5. It's absolutely not possible to pay workers a better wage and still be profitable (an idea that completely ignores the very real fact that Middle/Working/Poor wages haven't risen in real dollars since 1979 while income of the wealthy has outpaced inflation, productivity, their cost of living and lotteries).
6. The post-WWII boom cannot be replicated (no one's really saying it HAS to be; that doesn't mean we have no choice but to accept "Trickle-On" . . . there ARE happy mediums).
7. The Republican model of Free Trade, a zero-sum proposition that surmises because the price of tchotchkes are going down, the worker is better off . . . among other things (this ignores the very real fact that it's ever-increasing-in-price necessities (i.e. education, housing, health care, transportation, food, etc) that are killing the average American's pocketbooks).
8. The Republican model of Globalization, a zero-sum proposition that dictates (for all nations involved) environmental standards, worker rights, worker wages, worker morale, worker safety and business regulations must be destroyed in proportion to the enormous increase in company productivity on the BACKS of those strained workers, layoffs, profits, CEO/management salaries, perk packages, stock options, exit packages and, as we're tragically seeing, governmental influence.
9. The Republican model of offshore outsourcing, another zero-sum proposition that laughably states "While we ship low-skill work over THUR, it frees up better jobs fur the higher-skill 'Murkin workers over HERRR!" (yet again ignoring the fact that high-skilled work is ALSO being shipped overseas and companies are getting tax breaks to DO so).
10. Americans simply have to accept a lower standard of living adherent to their inevitably lower wages (There's never a discussion on how wages can keep up with the cost of living, productivity and inflation . . . only that we can't participate in a consumer-based economy by proxy, but the wealthy absolutely HAVE to have THEIR needs met first, foremost and often times, ONLY).
