Obama's approval losses could be "offset by improved voter attitudes about the economy"

Tuesday, May 21, 2013 01:20 PM -0700

Citing a Tuesday poll from the Washington Post showing that President Obama’s approval on the economy is at 48 percent, up from 44 percent in April, Silver writes: “The economic mood may have been lifted by two highly visible indicators — record-breaking stock prices and rebounding housing prices — along with a series of improved jobs reports.”

But a new Washington Post-ABC News poll also finds that allegations of impropriety related to the controversies have yet to affect President Obama’s political standing. . . .

For the first time since the 100-day mark of Obama’s first term, most say they are optimistic about the direction of the economy. More than half, 56 percent, say the economy is on the mend, the most to say so in polls since 2009. . . .

After two months of clearly negative ratings over his handling of the economy, Obama has climbed back to about even, with as many now approving as disapproving of his performance on this front. The president also holds a nine-percentage-point advantage over congressional Republicans on the issue.

A couple of years in there was all this great financial news that everyone thought was baloney and then suddenly everybody's buying a car. Generalizing of course.

Then again one evening of CNN would be enough to send any gullible viewer into Upsidedownland. And then there's the ratpack, with their tweeds and trophies, making sure that even the few seeking more substantial information never make it off the island.

But at least they're here, so there's a slim chance that maybe we can help them . . .

And we don't yet know what sequestration has in store for the future, but I'm willing to be "cautiously" optimistic. I think home prices rebounding has taken even some of the smartest economists by surprise.

I don't want to jinx it either but after four years of very careful seeding I think the clouds are going to burst and nothing's going to stop them.

And the GOP is all about making money so I imagine they'll fall in line once spending starts going up and that will probably be happening soon. Let's hope!
