This is getting as interesting as the Gonzalez hearings.
Douglas Shulman (Former IRS commissioner) is ducking and weaving, denying any knowlege despite
dozens of Congressional letters over the years that prove otherwise.
J. Russell George (Inspector general for IRS) just told committee that his investigation is being stalled because IRS employees are not telling the truth.
Plus the House Committee is using very clear plain spoken language in their questioning.

edited to add: the true hero of this mess is J. Russell George (Inspector general for IRS)
who answers clearly, who cannot say everything he knows because of laws about his investigation and who is trying to suggest the IRS system is pretty fucked up.

(15,799 posts)Can't help thinking that it would be more effective and more informative if certain republicans would refrain from showcasing their snotty bellicosity. They demean the process and embarrass the country.

(2 posts)I want to know why the dems are hitting them on the fact just about everyone got the exemption but were politically active. That is the crime.

(32,324 posts)They are politically active.
The Big Picture that Democratic "Loyalists" don't want to see is that if it is legal for the IRS under Obama to go after the Tea Party members, then when the CIA lets the Republicans win, (Doesn't anyone remember 2000?) it will be us progressive liberals under attack.
Oh and a big hearty welcome to DU.

(4,234 posts)how can you ignore any organization with tea party in its name? Your mandate after all is to find cases where social organizations are actually political orgs? How can the tea party NOT be more politically active than socially active?
If this were me, using google to save time because of the huge number of cases to investigate, "tea party" would be among the first search words I'd try if I were looking for politically active groups pretending to be social welfare groups in order to hide their contributors.
I suspect that is exactly what the IRS persons did. And once they investigated these groups, how on God's green earth did the IRS decide that the orgs were not primarily political in nature?

(60,010 posts)One of the panel members, did not catch his name, I am listening more than watching a small screen.
Tho I did catch..the former head, Shulman, a Bush appointee, sounded exactly like all the past Bush appointees..
"It wasn't my fault, I did not know anything, I have no idea who did what when, but it wasn't me, go blame someone else, blah blah blah."

(60,010 posts)A concept that should be reinvigorated in the case of Schulman, who answers any question about "accepting responsiblilty" by parroting " I accept this happened on my watch, I am very sorry it happened"
but refuses to "accept responsibilityfor all the actions of all the people in the report."

If something shit- like does hit the fan, you are allowed to say, "I don't remember. And oops, I am sorry." And none of it will hurt your Teflon career.
in fact there are several videos up on "Russia Today," dating back to early last Autumn, that suggest that the entire affection and fondness the Obama Administration has showered on the NDAA and its Section 1021 is directly linked to the need to keep everything (almost down to the level of toilet paper used by officials) classified as "Top Secret" so that one Tim Geithner doesn't get in trouble.
Apparently by way of discovering a 2008 Geithner email, the world of journalists now knows that he knew about and kept hidden the laundering of dirty drug cartel money by HSBC way way back in 2008! Funny how so much effort has been made to keep the NDAA and Section 1021 up and running. Be a decent journalist who interviews a whistle blower, and you' re inviting detention without charges and perhaps without any possibility of being released. Be a Tim Geithner and all is well.
And rememebr how Lil timmy ahd never bothered to file his 12040's? A criem most of us would have been financially wiped out over - losing our business, our home and back taxes toboot! But Lil Tim got to hed The US Treasury instead.

(116,464 posts)...is they're trying to create the impression that this has something to do with Obama, and the Bush appointee who headed up the IRS is denying involvement. The only people being ensnared by their witchhunt is them.
Looks like they found the source of the IRS cover-up: Darrell Issa
