The American Red Cross estimates “several million” dollars have been donated via electronic text messages since a tornado devastated Moore on Monday, but the money is not specifically designated to relief efforts in Oklahoma.

A representative of the local chapter, however, promised money donated to the local organization will be used for relief efforts in Oklahoma.

Ann Marie Borrego, spokeswoman for the American Red Cross in Washington, D.C., verified Tuesday that money donated by texting “REDCROSS” to 90999 will instead go toward a national disaster recovery fund.

Borrego responds that if people wish to donate to their local chapter — the Oklahoma Red Cross — they should do so via their website. She said she believes the agency clearly expresses how it will use donations sent via text message.

Donate to local Red Cross if you want the money used locally for the current disaster relief.

7. If you donate to a LOCAL red cross, the money stays local. If you donate to the NATIONAL red cross

it goes into the general disaster relief fund. Some MAY be used for this disaster wherever it is needed, but it also goes into the general fund for future disasters and other things.

If you want it to stay local, donate to LOCAL red cross.

Not just Moore.

42 confirmed, 91 reported according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/May_18–20,_2013_tornado_outbreak

So the money is needed for many. I see it as good that it is getting spread around.

6. "will instead go toward a national disaster recovery fund" not specifically for OK.

Some of the money may end up being used in this outbreak, but also into the national disaster recovery fund. It is good to build that up for future disasters, but if someone is donating for THIS disaster, donate to local Red Crosses, NOT the National Red Cross. Not trying to discourage from donating, but if you want it to be used locally, then donate locally. If you donate to National RC, it will go into the general coffers, some of which "may end up" being used for this disaster.

Does that make sense?

9. Typical. Charity is secondary at best in these big name charities.
