Sergio Garcia apologized for saying he would "serve fried chicken" while making a joke about having Tiger Woods over for dinner.
The British newspaper The Guardian reported Garcia was asked in jest while on stage at the European Tour's awards dinner Tuesday night if he would invite Woods to dinner during the U.S. Open.
The Guardian reported Garcia said: "We will have him round every night. We will serve fried chicken."
The newspaper said Garcia released a statement through the European Tour: "I apologise for any offence that may have been caused by my comment on stage during The European Tour Players' Awards dinner. I answered a question that was clearly made towards me as a joke with a silly remark, but in no way was the comment meant in a racist manner."
Garcia has acknowledged not getting along with Woods and their testy relationship flared up again during The Players Championship at Sawgrass two weeks ago.

(61,694 posts)endorsements for golf clubs, etc. I think he switched to the senior tour 4-5 years later. Zoeller had won several majors (Masters and US Open) and had several really good endorsement deals which were promptly cancelled on him after mentioning fried chicken and collard greens as the menu Tiger would set up for the following PGA Banquet.

(10,611 posts)He was asked if, given their rivalry, he would have Tiger over for dinner.
In that context, there's no point to detailing exactly what you would serve unless you wanted to make a point about it.
He knew what the associated stereotype was. As did the low-level GOPers who circulated postcards of the Obama White House with watermelons on the lawn.

(5,580 posts)Or borsch for a russian, as i said to many people in other places fried chicken is just an american dish, to state its definitely some sort of ravial thing is putting your worldview on some one elses worldview.

(1,945 posts)She is an 87yr old avid golf fan (and former weekly golfer). She already despises Garcia. She says he holds up play and takes too long getting ready to hit the ball--moving his feet around, stepping up and back, practice swings etc. I know next to nothing about golf, but I was staying with her during some tournament a couple of months back, and every time Sergio was shown she griped about him. And in her eyes Tiger can do no wrong, so I'm sure right about now she's fuming, lol.
I kind of think if Sergio was looking for the more commonly recognized American food he would have chosen hamburgers or maybe hot dogs.
