[font color="navy" face="Verdana"]Sitting here, minding my own business, and it sure felt like a roller -- about 5 seconds' worth.
Anybody else feel it?

(14,157 posts)So 5.9 was surprising to me. Volcanic activity?
silverweb
(16,402 posts)[font color="navy" face="Verdana"]Very good Wiki article, still an active area:
"The source of heat for volcanism in the Lassen area is subduction off the Northern California coast of the Gorda Plate diving below the North American Plate.[5] The area surrounding Lassen Peak is still active with boiling mud pots, stinking fumaroles, and churning hot springs.[6] Lassen Volcanic National Park is one of the few areas in the world where all four types of volcano can be found (plug dome, shield, cinder cone, and strato)."

West Sac is nice.

(6,795 posts)We're right near the river...quite awesome.
It was weird. I never thought an earthquake would feel like that!!
silverweb
(16,402 posts)[font color="navy" face="Verdana"]Okay, West Sac, but still.... lol
I've been in California since '81, mostly in SoCal, just up here for a year now. There are 3 kinds: the shakers, the jolts, and the rollers. This felt like a roller to me. You're not from earthquake country originally, I take it?
blueamy66
(6,795 posts)It was definitely a roller!
Some of my friends up here are already calling it the Rage on the River.
I love downtown. Am going to spend another entire day down there again next week.

That's what I felt, too -- just a rocking for a few seconds. But it was kind of intense and my measuring spoons hanging in the kitchen were swinging back and forth.

(28,158 posts)My family up in Chico had their pant shook off them. Lol. They're saying it was north west of them, Greenville or Susanaville. That's unusual!
silverweb
(16,402 posts)[font color="navy" face="Verdana"]That's about 150+ miles northeast of Sacramento, up near the Lassen Volcanic National Park, which is still an active area. We might be in for more activity, so make sure your family has their emergency supplies in order.
Lone_Star_Dem
(28,158 posts)I will. We're not really used to earthquakes up this way. The whole family moved from L.A. because of all the quakes.
silverweb
(16,402 posts)[font color="navy" face="Verdana"]Being prepared is the most important thing. When you know where to shelter, and that you have emergency supplies and communications available, it really helps your peace of mind.
My son does a lot of work with the Red Cross and has taught me a lot. Here's a good place to start: http://chapters.redcross.org/ca/mtyco/ds/emgcheck.html

Lone_Star_Dem
(28,158 posts)Been there done that, and now I'm a bit of a neurotic in that area. I shared it with my mom and sister, who both tend to stick their heads in the sand. It actually seems to be helping to drive home some of what I've been preaching to them.
I can't thank you enough for that!

(243 posts)My earthquake app. indicates a 5.7 quake approx. 7 mi NWN of Greenville about 45 mins. ago and a swarm of smaller quakes ranging from 1.8 to 3.7 as I type.
silverweb
(16,402 posts)[font color="navy" face="Verdana"]It'll be interesting to hear the analysis in the next day or so, find out if there's increasing volcanic activity in the area.

A lot of memes circulating about how minor it was, and how freaked out we were.
Nothing ever happens in Sacramento but serial killers.

(146,288 posts)I lived in California for most of my life, until I moved to Minnesota in 2004. I'm 68 now. Earthquakes. I felt so many of them there. The first was when I was like 5 years old, and it rolled me out of bed. Over the years, I sort of grew used to them. Things would start shaking and I'd say to myself, "Ah, another earthquake." Then I'd wonder where it was centered and how large it was, and go turn on the news in the years before the Internet.
It's part of life in California.
