S.C. Dems to Gov. Haley: Dismiss ‘white supremacist’ from campaign committee

Gov. Nikki Haley’s re-election campaign has no plans to remove a controversial volunteer who S.C. Democrats and others say has ties to white supremacist groups.

Democrats called on Haley to dismiss Roan Garcia-Quintana of Mauldin from the Republican’s grass-roots re-election committee, citing his ties to the Council of Conservative Citizens. Civil rights groups, including the Southern Poverty Law Center and the Anti-Defamation League, have labeled that council a hate group.

In an interview with The State, Garcia-Quintana dismissed accusations of racism, saying the council “supports Caucasian heritage.”

“Is it racist to be proud of your own heritage? Is it racist to want to keep your own heritage pure?” Garcia-Quintana said. “Racist is when you hate somebody so much that you want to destroy them.”

It's only racist if by "heritage" you mean "genes" rather than "traditions" - which anyone who uses the word "Caucasian" to describe their heritage clearly does.

Added on edit: There is no such thing as "caucasian heritage" - there are billions of caucasian people across dozens of countries, with no cultural common denominator. There *are* regional heritages, some of them from predominantly caucasian or historically predominantly caucasian regions, and I think it's usually an actively good thing to celebrate and preserve those, but anyone from the region should be encouraged to do so, regardless of their race.

I'm, if not proud, at least fond, of large parts my own heritage, and I try to keep it alive and "purish" - I'm a keen morris dancer, I try to learn british folk songs, and I'm enthusiastic about British political traditions, and I sniff slightly at people who file Bod Dylan or Joan Baez in the same section of the music catalogue as Steeleye Span or Ewan McColl.

I don't think that any of that has anything to do with being "Caucasian", though. Quite the reverse, I would prefer it if more people of all races shared my interests, because it would help keep them thriving.

Keeping a tradition "pure" is either about ensuring that it doesn't change at all (which I think is generally a bad idea, at least as far as applied to my interests) or about ensuring that what gets added is in the spirit of what comes before (which I approve of). What it *isn't* about is restricting who does it - quite the reverse, if you care about your traditions, you should try to popularise them as widely as possible.

Which rather makes me wonder if by "heritage" he actually means "genes", rather than "traditions".

I think that heritage means "traditions", not "genes".

I think that preserving the spirit and a good chunk of the letter of traditions one claims a connection to is what "keeping one's heritage pure" means (as much as it means anything - it's a fairly nebulous phrase, and not one I would ever use myself).

I don't think preventing people of other races taking part in a tradition is keeping the tradition itself pure, it's just keeping the *people who practice them* "pure" - i.e. monochromatic. And that's not the same thing at all, and clearly is racist.

I bet you this guy has told the Governor that she is "one of the good ones". And she's the jackass that thought it was cool that he said that.

Anyways - its SC. I hope the Democrats that vote there can put up a good fight - but I fear they will lose on this one.
