I don't know if this story is true or not, but I was told when I was a kid that the old Miss. River bridge in Vicksburg was built by slaves. While they were sinking the pilings, some of the slaves fell down the tubes. It was deemed too much trouble to get them out, so they left them in there to die. That story always gave me chills.

A significant part of America's dark history is rooted in slavery and genocide. When we wonder why this country is so violent today, it's good to be mindful of that past.

I knew that slavery existed in the northern states as well as in the south, but you really don't hear much about it.
